Business:
a. The Committee reviewed the Departmental Objectives and Measures for FY 2002/03
along with attendance statistics and the visitor survey compilation for the year. In most
respects it was a disappointing year, although that fact reflected a national economic
situation. There was some concern that the increase in admission fee and the
construction of the Arena and seawall contributed to the poor attendance. It was thought
that, while these might be contributing factors, the poor attendance experienced by the
Lexington suggested that greater issues were at play.
b. There was an extensive discussion of the increasing demands on parking and increased
traffic anticipated in association with the completion of the Arena and construction of the
baseball stadium. This concern should be reflected in Port's proposal to maximize the
parking available in the area associated with the establishment of a Water Taxi stop
adjacent to the Ortiz Center. The issues outlined by the Museum director were discussed.
c. A number of tall ships will be brought to Corpus Christi by the Buccaneer Commission
from May 4 through 10, 2004. They will be docked at the Ortiz Center. During a
discussion of this event,a number of suggestions were made to guide Museum staff in
their discussions with the Buc Commission:
- charge admission to the ships only through the west gate of the Plaza
- offer a joint ticket with the tall ships
- co-sponsor a Cinqo de Mayo event on May 5th
- develop a renaissance fair type event with the Buc Commission
- give tours with costumed tour guides
- relocate Nifia if there is room at the Ortiz Center
d. The City Council will recognize the contribution of the Advisory Committee and staff in
development of the Corpus Christi History exhibit and curriculum guide on July 30h.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
