The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum's DeDietrich Conference 'iie., at Noon Ct
on Thursday, March 4, 2004. Members Present: Shirley Abrams, Grady Price Blo 641-igtSy,'°x
Brennecke, Sharon Brower, Tony Diaz, Angie Flores, Joe Martinez, and Phyllis Riddle. ---
Upon motion by Tony Diaz and seconded by Joe Martinez the minutes of the February 5, 2004
meeting were unanimously approved.
Upon motion by Joe Martinez and seconded by Angie Flores the absence of Grady Price Blount
was unanimously excused for good cause.
Due to an anticipated out-of-town trip by the Museum Director, Chair Phyllis Riddle asked that
the April Committee meeting be moved from its nornual date to April 8 at Noon.
Business:
A. Upon motion by Tony Diaz and seconded by Grady Price Blount the Committee
unanimously approved the funding concept proposed to leverage marketing investments by
the Friends Board and the Convention and Visitors Bureau. This is an effort to address the
continuing drop in Museum attendance.
B. Museum staff reported on two marketing brochures. The Museum's rack card will be
discontinued and replaced by a joint brochure with the Art Museum. The Museum is also
participating with its five La Salle Odyssey partners and the Texas Historical Commission in
the development of a brochure to market the La Salle Odyssey exhibits.
C. Rick Stryker reported on the revenue estimates submitted to the Budget Office for FY
2004/05. FY 03/04 budgeted revenue was $215,628 (Museum) $143,505 (Ships), but it now
appears revenue will be $161,902 / $95,672 largely due to the drop in attendance. Based on
this year's experience, FY 04/05 revenue is expected to be $167,196/ $95,673.
D. It is anticipated that the Friends will approve the Director's request to fund the purchase of
a networked point-of-sale system for the gift shop and admissions. This application of
technology will reduce the labor intensive nature of cash accounting. Also funded by the
Friends will be the development of an internet based scheduling program that will make it
possible for school teachers to schedule group tours on-line. This will ultimately shift
communication with teachers from problematic real time communication by telephone to a
more convenient system of e-mail communication.
E. WiFi technology will soon be in place in the City that will enable the Museum to provide
real time, live programming to school classrooms via computers from remote locations such
as the Columbus ships. The potential for this interaction is really unknown, but as funding
for school field trips continues to diminish, this could become an outreach alternative.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
