Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History
Advisory Committee Meeting
May 6, 2004
The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum's DeDietrich Conference Room at Noon
on Thursday, May 6, 2004. Members Present: Shirley Abrams, Grady Price Blount, Hank
Brennecke, Sharon Brower, Margaret Bolick, Joe Martinez, and Phyllis Riddle.
Upon motion by Grady Price Blount and seconded by Margaret Bolick the minutes of the April 8,
2004 meeting were unanimously approved.
Upon motion by Sharon Brower and seconded by Grady Price Blount the absences of Hank
Brennecke, Shirley Abrams, and Joe Martinez were unanimously excused for good cause.
Chair Phyllis Riddle reminded members of the reception on May 19th hosted by the Mayor and
City Council honoring board, commission, and committee volunteers for their service to the City.
This event will be at the Museum.
Business:
A. On April 29 Phyllis and Friends Board members again met with Mayor Neal and
representatives of other museums to discuss collaborative marketing. At a third meeting
earlier today including representatives from most visitor service entities in the area, it was
decided to ask the City Council to support a destination name for the area. It was also
requested that each entity make a recommendation on continuing the light rail trolley
planning by the RTA. A presentation to the City Council by Tom Galyon of the CVB
representing the interests of the entities in the area will take place on May 11.
B. The Committee viewed a short video presenting a unified marketing/destination concept
for the area. Upon motion by Margaret Bolick and seconded by Joe Martinez the Committee
unanimously supported the initiative to designate the area along the bay front north of
Interstate 37 and including the south end of Corpus Christi Beach "Harbor Place" and
supported the completion of the Downtown Transportation Study to determine the cost and
feasibility of developing a streetcar system. If the determination is made that the streetcar
system is feasible and affordable, the Committee endorsed the Water Garden Routing Option.
C. Upon motion by Margaret Bolick and seconded by Shirley Abrams the Committee
unanimously recommended that the City Council approve a lease agreement with Ships of
Discovery.
D. Upon motion by Grady Price Blount and seconded by Shirley Abrams the Committee
unanimously asked that the City Council include the Museum's highest priority deferred
maintenance issues in the 2004 bond issue including air handling unit replacement
($200,000), the HVA/C remediation issues ($60,000), and the emergency HVA/C system
repair/replacement ($75,000). The Committee also asked the City Council to support the
completion of the fire suppression system project -Phase 2 ($160,000).
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
