Upon motion by Tony Diaz and seconded by Alex Sadovski the minutes of the September 2,
2004 meeting were unanimously approved. Upon motion by Grady Price Blount and seconded
by Phyllis Riddle the absences of Tony Diaz, Sharon Brower, and Alex Sadovski were excused
for good cause.
Chairman Phyllis Riddle introduced Linda Scott who has been nominated by the Museum
Auxiliary to serve on the Advisory Committee.
Business:
A. A committee made up of representatives from the Museum of Science and History and the Art
Museum of South Texas met to develop a list of common issues associated with the
Watergarden area. Phyllis Riddle represented the Museum Advisory Committee on this ad
hoc committee and reported on those issues. The issues were reflective of many previous
discussions by the Advisory Committee and the consensus was that the Museum Director
should forward them to the City Manager so that they could be used for area planning.
B. The Committee reviewed a La Salle Odyssey final report that was submitted to the Texas
Historical Commission and was expected to be submitted to the Meadows Foundation and
the Houston Endowment. The Museum received and spent $127,032 from these three
sources out of a total budget of$201,000. The balance remaining for the total project is
about $45,000 which will be spent on a number of elements that have not yet been
completed. Museum staff will continuously improve the exhibit as new information and
artifacts become available. Many of the artifacts are still in conservation or being held back
by the THC while they are in the hands of researchers. At this point, none of the considerable
research commissioned by the THC has been made publicly available. For these reasons
there will be significant changes and enhancements over the next several years.
C. La Salle Odyssey participants have collaborated to produce a common brochure, 70,000 of
which will be printed and distributed over the next year. The Museum of Science and
History's share is 20,000 brochures. On a parallel course an audio driving tour CD is being
produced that will be for sale in each institution.
D. The southern terminus of the new utility crossing for the ship channel will be located in the
Museum's Chaparral/Mesquite parking lot. The installation project will require the closing
of this parking lot for a period of about four months from January through April which
eliminates =50 parking spots. A follow-on project will remove the old utility crossing that
terminates between Pinta and the ship channel. This enhances the proposal to relocate the
ships into a marina to be developed on that site.
