on Thursday, June 151. Members Present: Sharon Brower, Cheryl Gillenwater, Randall
Meredith, Phyllis Riddle, and Linda Scott.
Upon motion by Phyllis Riddle and seconded by Linda Scott, the minutes of the May 4, 2006
meeting were approved as presented. Upon motion by Randall Meredith and seconded by Sharon
Brower the absence of Linda Scott was approved for good cause.
Chairman's remarks: Members were reminded that they need to complete the open meetings act
training which is available on line and through a CD that Rick can provide.
Business:
a. Rick reported on a teleconference with the team from Appelbaum and Associates regarding the
progress of the visualized concept study. A general discussion followed. A visit by the
Appelbaum team is expected later in the month.
b. Rick Stryker explained his decision to restructure the Museum staff by hiring a professional
collection manager and registrar with full responsibility for care of collections. This will enable
the outsourcing of curatorial responsibilities for research and collection development. Research
has never been an integral responsibility of staff curators at this Museum. The Director will
recruit people from the community as needed to serve on collection committees and he will
involve the Advisory Committee in the appointment of non-staff individuals as adjunct curators.
Eliminating collection care as a responsibility for staff curators allows for the elimination of one
curator position. The job responsibilities of the other curator position will focus on
programming. This is a good result doubling the number of senior staff positions with that
charge. One programming person (Sandra Linderman) will concentrate on outreach and program
development, one person (Don Zuris) will concentrate on history program resources and
development, and the assistant educator(Amy Bishop) will focus on science resource
programming now including development of programming with live animals.
c. Rick reported that the date for the 50th anniversary of the Museum is June, 2007. He briefly
told the Committee about some of the ideas being discussed by the Friends Board and staff
d. Staff Reports
• The Farm to Market exhibit sponsored and staffed by the Junior League hosted about
2,400 students. It was a very labor intensive effort, particularly the second week when
the Junior League passed off responsibility to the Museum staff.
• There were over 1,000 participants on Water Day hosted by the water utility departments,
for which admission was free.
• The American alligator outgrew the Museum habitat and was transferred to the Coastal
SCANNED
Bend Zoological Gardens. After the habitat is refurbished a new baby alligator will be
acquired.
• There will be a series of workshops in June for teachers under a U.S. Department of
Education Grant through the Region 2 Education Service Center.
• The Museum staff will host Family Fun Times starting June 7th and continuing on
Wednesdays through the summer.
• The seventh annual field school/archaeological investigation with joint sponsorship by
TAMU-K will take place along the lower Nueces River.
e. The Committee decided that they will not meet in July due to the proximity of Independence
Day to the normal meeting date.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
