Advisory Committee Meeting
August 3, 2006
The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum's DeDietrich Conference Room Jt goon
on Thursday, June 1s'. Members Present: Sharon Brower, Cheryl Gillenwater, Phyllis Riddle,
Linda Scott, and Linda Tomo.
Upon motion by Phyllis Riddle and seconded by Linda Scott, the minutes of the June 1, 2006
meeting were approved as presented. Upon motion by Sharon Brower and seconded by Linda
Scott the absence of Linda Tomo was approved for good cause.
Chairman's remarks: The terms of Robert Hatherill, Linda Tomo, Anna Peterson, and Margaret
Bolick are expiring in September. They were asked to notify Rick Stryker if they would like to
request reappointment by the Mayor and Council. There will be at least one new appointee due
to the recent resignation of Grady Price Blount from the Committee. At the September meeting
members will be asked to recommend people who might be considered for appointment. All
individuals interested in appointment must have a résumé or Biographical Information Form filed
in the City Secretary's Office to be considered.
Business:
a. Rick briefed the Committee on June's preliminary presentation of the Visualized Concept
Study done by the team from Appelbaum and Associates. There was a long discussion of the
issues that were being addressed by the study. It is expected that the Study will be completed
within the next couple months. The"neighborhood" issues are currently under discussion.
b. The budget was adopted by the City Council. As recommended by the Committee the budget
included full time funding for the preparator position. It did not fully fund one senior staff
position that will remain vacant through most of next fiscal year to assure a reduction in staff
costs. The position, formerly a collection curator position, will be reclassified to collection
registrar. No increases in fees were included in the adopted budget.
c. 64,250 people visited the Museum in FY 2005/06, up from 57,453 the previous year. There
were 18,253 school children, up from 12,969 the previous year. Much more detailed data will be
available for analysis and review at the next meeting.
d. Rick Stryker was elected to the Texas Tropical Trail Board of Directors. The Tropical Trail is
a marketing collaborative sponsored by the Texas Historical Commission including 20 counties
in South Texas. Further information is available on the web site: www.texastropicaltrail.com,
