HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Museum Of Science And History Advisory Committee - 09/07/2006 ‘110 141110 _,02.933d%„. ti (?.? bi MINUTES Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History `r:: Advisory Committee Meeting '�� t' - -. n/ September 7, 2006 The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum's DeDietrich Conference Room at Noon on Thursday, June Members Present: Margaret Bolick, Sharon Brower, Cheryl Gillenwater, Robert Hatherill, Phyllis Riddle, Linda Scott, and Linda Tomo. Upon motion by Phyllis Riddle and seconded by Sharon Brower, the minutes of the August 3, 2006 meeting were approved as presented. Upon motion by Linda Scott and seconded by Linda Tomo, the absences of Margaret Bolick and Robert Hatherill was approved for good cause. Business: a. The terms of Robert Hatherill, Linda Tomo, Anna Peterson, and Margaret Bolick are expiring in September. The willingness of Robert Hatherill, Linda Tomo, and Margaret Bolick to serve additional terms has been forwarded to the Mayor. This still leaves two vacancies. Upon motion by Margaret Bolick and seconded by Phyllis Riddle, Dr. Jonda Halcomb, and Ms. Nelida Ortiz were unanimously recommended to the Mayor for appointment. b. The 4ih Quarter Performance Report(end of the fiscal year) is being prepared for the City Council's review later this month. Rick Stryker provided a copy of the Museum's departmental Performance Report and the visitor survey for FY 2005/06. There was a discussion of the noteworthy points contained in the report and survey. c. Part of the Texas Heritage Tourism Program involves the evaluation of heritage and cultural sites within the Texas Tropical Trails Region. A team from the Texas Historical Commission evaluated 71 facilities in 36 communities in the 20 county Texas Tropical Trail Region including the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. They focused on five areas: Tourism Development, Collections Care and Exhibits, Interpretation, Historic Architecture/Building Maintenance, and Marketing. In each of these areas they identified the "advantages" of each facility and made some "recommendations." In most areas they noted advantages for the Museum of Science and History. In marketing, however, they made 10 recommendations for improvement. Where relevant, the team noted Distinguishing Features that made a given facility stand out. The distinguishing feature for the Museum of Science and History noted by the THC team was the"excellent quality replicas of Columbus'ships." d. The City Manager convened a meeting with the design team working on the Bayfront Improvements and updating the area development plan(Gignac/Sasaki) and Chip Jeffries of Ralph Appelbaum. Also included were senior City staff members and representatives of the Art Museum and the American Bank Center. A consensus emerged on the most fruitful direction for addressing the planning issues in the museum area. Sasaki Associates, who are urban planners, will develop a concept based on consensus solutions and it will be included in the Appelbaum Report. It is expected that the visualized concept study will be completed in October. SCANNED 41.0 e. Rick Stryker reported on the ideas for celebrating the Museum's 50th anniversary that have come out of the Friends Board meetings: *50th anniversary stationary(labels) *McGregor exhibit of 25 to 40 images *slide show with hundreds of pictures(look to the past as well as the future) *a dinner event with heavy hors d'oeuvres and a guest speaker with special treasure hunt and door prizes *a series of issues presentations (Bob Drolet, Jim Moloney, xeriscape, local authors) *expanded mailing list, *month long celebration with speakers all year long, The meeting adjourned at 1:00 p.m..
