HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Museum Of Science And History Advisory Committee - 03/05/2009 RECEIVED MAR 2 7 2009 MINUTES Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE Advisory Committee Meeting March 5, 2009 The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum's DeDietrich Conference Room at Noon on Thursday, March 5, 2009. Members Present: Margaret Bolick, Robert Hatherill, Kathy Juneau, Shannon Madden, and Jim Moloney. Upon motion by Jim Moloney and seconded by Kathy Juneau, the minutes of the January 8, 2008 meeting were approved as presented. Business: a. Upon motion by Jim Moloney and seconded by Kathy Juneau the Committee unanimously approved the deaccession of: - For transfer to Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures: 281 Asian(Indian) Cultural objects - Due to poor condition, excessive redundancy, or no longer within Museum mission: 157 Sam Frank Purchase objects(toys,political pieces, purses, costume jewelry) 60 Toys 68 Womens/Mens Costume Jewelry 457 Miscellaneous items including 388 lapel pins Plus assorted other objects b. Upon motion by Margaret Bolick and seconded by Robert Hatherill the Committee unanimously approved a motion to concur with the appointment by the Museum Director of Jose Medina as Adjunct Curator of Anthropology for the period June 1, 2009 to July 1, 2010. There is no commitment of compensation with this appointment. Mr. Medina is a Ph.D. student at the Universidad Iberonamerica in Mexico City doing research on Lipan Apache ethno-history and ethnology in south Texas. Mr. Medina will be supervised both here and at Texas A &M University—Corpus Christi by Museum Archeologist Dr. Robert Drolet. c.With the new carpenter on board progress is being made on the repairs to Pinta. It remains open for public tours while work proceeds. The Consul General for Spain in Houston determined that it was not possible to get the repairs to Nina done by the planned May deadline so he has postponed the trip to Houston by the ship until early next year. He is working on a response to matters that will be included in the Memorandum of Understanding. d. Fiscal year attendance was down 8%through February. Paid attendance was down almost 16%. Many revenue sources such as sales tax are projected to decline which are SCANNED 46110 of greater concern than Museum attendance revenue. As a result, tt is expected that the Museum budget will necessarily be reduced next fiscal year along with other City departments. e. Staff reports Position vacancies have recently been filled. New employees are filling the Collection Manager, Registrar, Carpenter, and (2) Tour Guide positions. Only recently the Science Educator position was filled. The Preparator and one of the three Tour Guide positions will be left vacant as a cost saving measure. The vacancies, some of which were long teen, have enabled the Museum to amass a significant salary savings this fiscal year. A new rack card has been printed with underwriting by the Friends of the Museum. We have continued our marketing collaboration with the Art Museum. Copies of a report on the accomplishments of the Texas Tropical Trail Region were distributed. Museum Director Rick Stryker is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the TTTR.
