Members Present: Gene Pennebaker, Dwayne Dean, Ruth O'Brien, Deborah Kobelan, Alda Klett, Susie Sedwick, Art Howerton, Delbert Hooper, Cindy Gamez, and Alicia Perez . Members Absent: Linda Cano and Sharon Brower. Chair Alicia Perez called the meeting to order, and the minutes of the July 1st meeting were approved as written. The absence of Susie Sedwick from the last meeting was excused for good cause. 4a . Rick Stryker introduced Malcolm Matthews, Director of Park & Recreation Department . Mr. Matthews advised that the proposal for the picnic tables for the Watergarden side of the Museum is as follows : 4 units each: 36" diameter round table with 3 curved benches (could seat about 6 adults and 10 children) Wood tables would be subject to vandalism, and metal would rust . Therefore, stone was chosen. Also, it was felt that stone would provide a more formal look. (Round tables and curved benches will also deter people from sleeping on these picnic tables in the evening. ) The benches will have concrete pads underneath them (cost to be absorbed by the Park & Recreation Department) . The Parks Department maintains the grounds around the Museum, and these tables will be included in that upkeep. The cost for each picnic unit will be $861, for a total cost of $3 , 500 . The Advisory Committee unanimously approved this plan. Alda Klett advised that, at their last Board meeting, the Museum Auxiliary voted to assist monetarily with this project but did not decide on a specific amount . The Friends will be asked to participate in support of this project . 4b. Lynne Dean presented a group rate policy for the Committee' s consideration. Since she has been handling group tours for the Columbus Fleet, she' s been getting requests for group rates for the Museum. Attached is the proposed group rate policy for children and adults . A combination ticket with the Columbus Fleet has also been in demand. Museum staff now takes the reservations for the Columbus Fleet, so this would not require additional staffing or expense. However, it would provide additional benefits for the Museum. The proposed combination ticket policy is attached. The Advisory Committee voted unanimously to accept both the group rate and the combination ticket policies . 4c . Mr. Stryker asked John Meek, Museum Educator, to check on the cost of rental facilities for birthday parties . The Museum currently charges $25 for non-members and $20 for members for the SCANNED 4 + Advisory Committee Meeting August 5, 1993 Page 2 use of the Classroom for 3 hours for up to 20 children (the host must clean the room) plus the "Black Hole" game . Mr. Meek reported on various facilities and their costs, all of which were much greater than the Museum' s charge. Mr . Stryker asked the Committee to consider whether or not the Museum' s price should be increased. The members advised they want more information but would, possibly, be in favor of increasing the non-member fee. 4d. John Meek also reported on the Summer Program. 127 students attended a total of 12 classes (it takes 5 children to make a class) . The two teachers hired were exceptional . They did all the work: setup, teach and tear down. The 3-5 years age group class was the most popular; 6-8 years age group was moderately successful; and the 9-13 years age group classes did not make . The teachers will meet with John to discuss which classes and techniques were successful and which were not . Mr . Meek also talked about developing workshop-type programs for the weekends throughout the year and reported on other aspects of the educa- tion program. 4e. The Xeriscape Project is under construction. The first kiosk will be under construction by the end of this month. The walks are being laid, and the "in kind" type of work taking place will be able to be seen after the walks are in. With no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned at 1 :20 p.m. /sso
