Advisory Committee Meeting

The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum at 12 : 00 Noon,
Friday, January 7 , 1994 . Members Present: Alicia Perez, Alda
Klett, Susie Sedwick, Delbert Hooper, Dr. Linda Mora, Deborah
Kobelan, Cindy Gamez, Gwen Henzi, Gene Pennebaker and Dwayne
Dean. Members Absent : Sharon Brower and Ruth O'Brien.
Chair Alicia Perez called the meeting to order and introduced the
newest member of the Advisory Committee, Gwen Henzi . Gwen was
appointed by the City Council on Tuesday, January 4, 1994 .
The minutes of the December 2 , 1993 meeting were unanimously
approved as written.
The absence of Alicia Perez from the last meeting was approved
for good cause.
Gene Pennebaker moved that Alicia Perez be nominated as Chair for
1994 . Susie Sedwick seconded the motion. Mrs . Perez accepted
the nomination, and the Advisory Committee unanimously approved.
Susie Sedwick moved that Gene Pennebaker be nominated as Vice
Chairman for 1994 . Alicia Perez seconded the motion. Mr .
Pennebaker accepted the nomination, and the Advisory Committee
unanimously approved.
Long Range Plan - Rick Stryker led this discussion. He requested
input from the Committee regarding anything we ought to do or
consider in the way of exhibits that we are not presently doing
(or vice versa) . Jane Deisler-Seno suggested bird and insect
exhibits . "Human Concerns" was a suggested category (this could
deal with nutrition and reproduction) . The ecosystem was another
category suggestion (this could be put in the marine science
area) .
Mr. Stryker advised that 3 exhibits per year locks up the Chang-
ing Exhibit Gallery. He is presently looking at 2 per year. The
Changing Exhibit Gallery gives the feeling of something new in
the Museum periodically. Mr. Stryker suggested that the Museum
continue the consortium exhibits, as he felt the $25, 000 cost of
the 9 exhibits from the Witte was money very well spent .
Mr. Stryker stated he would defer the Development Objectives to
the Friends . The Collections Objectives is a staff function;
therefore, he advised he would work with Museum staff over the
next month to develop some measurable progress .
Susie Sedwick stated she would like to see archaeology and
excavation of the Kenedy Ranch in the Long Range Plan.
Fee Schedules - A summary of the Museum' s fee schedules and an
attendance package were distributed to Committee members . Mr.
Stryker advised that attendance since August, 1993 has been

better due to the Museum' s association with the Columbus Fleet .
Attendance is up by 47% over the same period last year. Also,
the Aquarium had approximately 500 , 000 visitors last year. The
impact on Saturday attendance (no free adults) is that attendance
has increased this year over last year. The birthday party fees
were recently increased. Mr. Stryker stated he had no recommen-
dations to make on the fee structure. The Advisory Committee
took no action.
Winter Lecture Series - This series begins Tuesday, January 11 at
10 : 00 a .m. The first 3 lectures will be "Beachcombing" - Jane
Deisler-Seno; "Reptiles" - Jerry Latson; and "Doc McGregor" -
Ronnie Randolf .
Mr. Stryker is working with Dr. Paul Hain of Texas A & M - Corpus
Christi on a joint appointment of an archaeologist . He stated he
is working to get it into next year' s budget .
With no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned at
12 : 50 p.m.
