HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Museum Of Science And History Advisory Committee - 02/02/1995 MINUTES 01,7 Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History Advisory Committee Meeting February 2, 1995 The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum at 12 : 00 Noon, Thursday, February 2, 1994 . Members Present: Dr. Linda Mora, Alda Klett, Ruth O'Brien, Gene Pennebaker, Deborah Kobelan, Gwen Henzi, Frank Veltri, Linda Herndon, Delbert Hooper, C.W. Carpe- nter, Mary Longoria and Dwayne Dean. Chair Linda Mora called the meeting to order. Upon motion by Gene Pennebaker, seconded by Alda Klett, the minutes of the January 5, 1995 meeting were unanimously approved. Alda Klett moved and Gene Pennebaker seconded the motion excusing the absence of Mary Longoria and Dwayne Dean from recent meeting to the press of work. Business: a. Demolition in the Kenedy Wing is almost complete and it is expected that the building will be closed to the public by months end. Mr. Stryker reported on his trip to see the Spanish ceiling and the revisions made in the floor plan to accomodate the expanded gift shop. Upon motion by C.W. Carpenter, seconded by Gene Pennebaker the Committee unanimously endorsed the plans as presented by Mr. Stryker, including the effort to be undertaken by the Friends to acquire the Spanish ceiling. b. There has been some discussion that the present Museum name might not be adequately descriptive, with the addition of the Seeds of Change exhibit, the Columbus Fleet becoming a part of the operations of the Museum, and the impending completion of the Xeriscape Garden. Upon motion by Gene Pennebaker, seconded by Gwen Henzi, the Committee agreed unanimously to consider this issue and asked that public input be sought . They agreed to consider a recommendation to the City Council at their April meeting. c . The change of trustee for the Corpus Christi Museum Founda- tion was tabled for consideration at the March meeting. d. Upon motion by Delbert Hooper, seconded by Linda Herndon, the Committee unanimously adopted the proposed fee schedule. Effective May 15, with the approval of the City Managers admission to the Museum and the Fleet will cost : Adults $7 . 00 Children (ages 6-12) $3 .50 Senior Citizens $6 .50 Military (with ID) $6 .50 School Children (Group Tour) $2 . 00 (Columbus Fleet Only) Free Admission: - School Children on a group tour of only the Museum - children through age 5 SCANNED r Advisory Committee Meeting February 2, 1995 Page 2 - children under age 13 when accompanied by an adult on Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 12 Noon (Museum only) - members of the Friends of the Museum and Associates of the Columbus Fleet Association e. Delbert Hooper, Mary Longoria and Gwen Henzi reported on their attendance of the "Boards that Make a Difference" workshop representing the Museum Advisory Committee. Some of the materi- als from the workshop were distributed and Mr. Hooper offered to share his copy of the publication that accompanied the workshop for anyone wishing to read it . f. Other business - Gene Pennebaker suggested that all members take a look at the new exhibit recently opened. It wa also suggested that all Advisory Committee members who are not members of the Friends still receive invitations to the opening events . - Ruth O'Brien commented on the dangers of allowing politi- cal correctness to creep into exhibit development, using the example of the Enola Gay exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum as an example. f . There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1 :10 p.m. The next meeting of the Advisory Committee will be held on Thursday, March 2, 1994, at 12:00 Noon.
