Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History
Advisory Committee Meeting
April 1, 1999
The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum at Noon on Thursday, April 1, 1999.
Members Present: Woody Riley, Kathy Heymann, Art Howerton, Gwen Henzi, Donna Flynn,
Tony Diaz, and Pat Bacak-Clements.
Upon motion by Pat Bacak-Clements and seconded by Art Howerton, the minutes of the March
4, 1999 meeting were approved unanimously.
Upon motion by Art Howerton, seconded by Donna Flynn, the absense of Gwen Henzi and Kathy
Heymann were excused for good cause.
Business:
a. Jane Deisler-Seno presented a number of objects from the Natural History Collection that
were recommended for deaccession. Upon motion by Donna Flynn, seconded by Art Howerton,
the Committee unanimously approved the staff recommended deaccession of partial cow skulls, a
damaged cape buffalo mount, lower jaw of a bottlenose dolphin, skull of a bottlenose dolphin,
partial deer antler, whale vertebra, and a damaged tapir mount.
b. One of he possible models that might be emulated with the development of"harbor place"
is that which was done in Kemah on Clear Lake outside Houston. It has been recommended that
a group of community leaders lead by the Alliance visit Kemah, Moody Gardens in Galveston, and
the Johnson Space Flight Center in Houston to consider the potential of development in Corpus
Christi. The Museum master plan should be developed on its own merits. The next step will be a
focus group that seeks the input of people from the community about their ideas for the future of
the Museum.
c. The parameters provided for the development of the Museum budget does not
contemplate any reduction in service or staff level The initial budget request is due April 9.
d. Sandra Linderman did a presentation on the program that will be offered this summer. It
has been a number of years since a summer program has been offered. The upcoming program
will be on a small scale.
e. There was a presentation on two upcoming temporary exhibits. Buffalo Soldiers is an
exhibit on the African American soldiers that served in the U.S. Army during the 19th century.
They are recognized in Texas for the role that they played in the Indian wars. This exhibit opens
June 19 and will be up through mid August. Children of Children is an exhibit of photos and
stories about teenage motherhood by a photographer from San Antonio, Michael Nye. The
Corpus Christi/Nueces County Health Department and the Corpus Christi Independent School
District will co-sponsor the exhibit and plan to do programming in association with its run at the
Museum. It will open in mid January and run through March, 2000.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1.15 p.m.
