Advisory Committee Meeting
September 2, 1999
The Museum Advisory Committee met in the Museum at Noon on Thursday, September.2, 1999.
Members Present: Henry Brennecke, Kathy Heymann, Donna Flynn, Gwen Henzi,Tony Diaz,
Mary G. Longoria, and Woody Riley.
Upon motion by Mary Longoria and seconded by Kathy Heymann, the minutes of the August 5,
1999 meeting were approved unanimously.
Upon motion by Mary Longoria and seconded by Tony Diaz the absences of Woody Riley and
Gwen Henzi were excused for good cause.
Business:
a. The Committee unanimously recommended that Mary Longoria, Kathy Heymann and Pat
Bacak-Clements be appointed to second terms.
b. The Committee discussed the report on the focus group sessions lead by Chip Jeffries of
Appelbaum and Associates. It was recognized that this was only one step in a long range
planning process. Further steps in the process will await completion of the Discovery
Hall project.
c. Sandra Linderman gave a detailed report on the educational program from the summer.
Nearly all slots(77 out of 80)were filled and all feedback was positive. There was a net
income when staff costs were not considered. A similar program will be offered next
summer, but it is hoped that a way can be found to support the cost of staffing.
d. In every quarter of the past year attendance dropped below previous levels. Summer
attendance was way down. The only explanation available for the decline, while other
attractions seem to be maintaining previous levels, is the Museum's lack of marketing
funds.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
