HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Parks And Recreation Advisory Committee - 09/11/2013 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE Regular Meeting September 11, 2013 5:15 p.m. 6th Floor Conference Room, City Hall 1201 Leopard St., Corpus Christi, TX 78401 The meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m. by L. Torres, Chairperson. L. Torres presented and welcomed Mr. Curtis Ford as one of the new members to PRAC. Roll Call Roll call was conducted by D. Rodriguez and quorum was announced. Members present: C. Ford, J. Kim, A. Hunter (arrived @ 5:30 p.m.) L. Torres, R. Padron, D. Ramirez, R. Woods, C. Valdez Sr., R. Barrera and H. Smith. Staff present: M. Morris, S. Talbert and D. Rodriguez. C. Haney was absent. C. Haney asked to be excused prior to the meeting due to work related travel. Liaison(s)absent: A. Dimas and J. Garcia. Approval of Minutes Minutes from the August 14, 2013 meeting were distributed for review. A motion was made by Carlos Valdez Sr. and seconded by Huxley Smith to approve the minutes as submitted. The motion was unanimously approved. Motion Carried. Minutes approved. Public Comment r Presentations for Discussion and Possible Action Destination Bayfront—The presentation will be presented at the October meeting due to a time conflict. M. Morris provided an update on Destination Bayfont. Old Business and Possible Action • 2013-2014 Task Force Assignments — The Athletics and Program Development Task Forces were combined. Rita Padron was added to the Finance/Marketing Task Force and Alexis Hunter was added to the Program Development Task Force. The Finance/Marketing Task Force will meet quarterly.All other Task Forces remained the same'. New Business and Possible Action r Committee, Liaison/Staff Reports • Finance/Marketing Task Force—No report • Program Development Task Force—No report • TAC/Bicycle and Pedestrian Subcommittee Liaison — H. Smith reported meeting with the City of Corpus Christi Engineering Department. The department changed the map designs to show the correct measurement for the bike lanes. • Planning & Development Task Force— No report • Watershore& Beach Advisory Committee Liaison- No report • Police Department Report—No report • Special Project Task Force—No report • Planning Department Report—No report • Horticulture Task Force—No report Director/Assistant Director Report—M. Morris/S.Talbert ■ Bond 2012 Update — M. Morris commented on the following projects: (Parks) - West Guth, Bill Witt, Billish, and Parker Parks; (Aquatics)-West Guth and Collier Pools-,(Tennis Centers)- HEB/AI Kruse Tennis Centers; (Shoreline Stabilization)-Swanter and Cole Parks; and Ethel Eyerly Senior Center. ■ Harbor Bridge-The City Council approved the Red Route which allows the new bridge to be built next to the existing bridge which connects to Crosstown. TC Ayers and Lovenskold Parks will be affected along with a small area in the parking lot to Oveal Williams Senior Center. Community meetings will be held on Monday, September 23rd at Oveal Williams Senior Center and Thursday, September 26th at Ben Garza Gym to get input from residents. TxDot proposed tearing down the old Washington Elementary School and building a new park in its place to remedy the affected parks. ■ Collier Park — Soil conditions to be determined. The PRAC Adopted sign will be moved on the 1st Work Day by PRAC. ■ Artesian Park—Improvements to be made on hold by adoptees. Bond money still available. Committee Member Comments/Announcements: C. Valdez Sr commented on the Home and Garden Show. C. Ford commented on Oso Nature Park; North Beach and Senior Centers. J. Kim commented on the Destination Bayfront Landscaping/Landscape Architect. R. Padron commented on the new park and a tribute to Mayor Lovenskold. A. Hunter commented on Swanter Park. R.Woods commented on Lindale Senior Center Community Gardens. R. Barrera commented on the new PRAC members. H. Smith commented on gutters at Garden Senior Center. L. Torres commented on the Presentation to City Council. S. Talbert commented on the Mayor's Fitness Council 5K Run. r Identify items to be placed on next agenda • Election of Officers • Oso Bay Nature Park • Destination Bayfront Presentation Adjournment A motion was made by Huxley Smith to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Carlos Valdez Sr. The motion was unanimously approved. Motion Carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
