HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Parks And Recreation Advisory Committee - 04/08/2015 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE Regular Meeting Wednesday,April 8, 2015 5:30 p.m. Third Floor Conference Room, City Hall 1201 Leopard St., Corpus Christi, TX 78401 MINUTES I. Call to Order at 5:30 pm ii. Roll Call of Members-Roll call was conducted by Hope Herrera. Members present: Chris Anderson, Curtis Ford, Carlos Haney, Alexis Hunter, Dr. Jinsun Kim, Dotson Lewis, Jr., Rick Pedraza, Jerry Plemons, Huxley Smith, and Carlos Valdez, Sr. Staff present: Stacie Talbert Anaya, Becky Perrin, and Hope Herrera, Nilesh Patel, Joshua Wentworth, Rosie Canales, Laura Jasso, Dena Atzenhoffer, and Emmalee Winters Members Absent: Lisa Torres III. Adoption of Minutes- Regular meeting — Adoption of Minutes from March 11, 2015 meeting Carlos Valdez motioned, Huxley Smith second, minutes approved. IV. Public Comment Please be advised that the Open Meetings Act prohibits the committee from responding and discussing your comments at length. The law only authorizes members to make a statement of factual information, recite an existing policy in response to the inquiry, or advise the citizen that this subject will be placed on an agenda at a later date. V. Presentation for Discussion and Possible Action a. Parks and Recreation Aquatics/Dena Atzenhoffer& Emmalee Winters Aquatics division gave the board a breakdown of the pool, the programs they offer, mentioned the partnerships with YMCA and YWCA. They mentioned the renovations at several sites that are in process already and the ones that are proposed. The shared their goals for the division, one being Summer Bash and hoping to bring back Spook-n-Splash. They discussed pool hours and pricing. They discussed how many staff member s they currently have in place and gave a breakdown of summer and winter staff. The aquatics staff also discussed how often the pools are used for swim meets. b. Parks and Recreation Park Operations and Master Plan/Joshua Wentworth &Nilesh Patel This division provided an organizational chart to show all the divisions within their division and what their job responsibilities are. They have park maintenance, park operations, storm water mowing crews and tourist district. Josh and Nilesh both explained their goals, hiring issues and how the division operates using the Gospel of Play and how they put those ideas into play within their daily work. VI. Old Business for Discussion and Possible Action a. Bayshore Park Update and Timeline/Stacie Talbert Anaya Stacie shared a Power Point presentation going over the proposed Bayshore Park from beginning to end. Her presentation went over what they want to do with the area, where they want to put things and the cost of it all. VII. New Business for Discussion and Possible Action VIII. Committee, Liaison/Staff Reports • Finance/Marketing Task Force—n/a • TAC/Bicycle and Pedestrian Subcommittee Liaison—n/a • Program Development Task Force—n/a • Planning & Development Task Force—n/a • Police Department Report—Capt. Robert Alvarado—working on transient's issue. CCPD has increased patrol at several parks, especially Blucher Park. The problems they are seeing are drugs, public restrooms being used for other activities and prostitution. CCPD are doing walk-thrus when they can and Sgt. Richards who drives the mule is constantly patrolling parks and areas around City Hall. IX. Director/Assistant Director Report a. Review of By-laws—reviewed new updates made to By-laws of meeting place and time. A copy was provided to everyone to review and if there are any suggestions to changes that need to be made to contact Hope. b. Update on WellMed Agreement -increasing center hours and finding partners to help with the implementation—so far, a good move. IX. Committee Member Comments/Announcements • Dr. Jinsun Kim—is there an architect company in Corpus Christi that can help with Bayshore Park? San Francisco company did Oso Bay Wetlands,will they look into this project? • Huxley Smith—questions about restrooms downtown and wants more info on Well Med • Curtis Ford—Who is in charge of attracting birds and wildlife to our parks? Neal and Carlos Valdez are already working on this. • Chris Anderson—more information and the process of accreditation and requested skate park info be added to June's agenda • Carlos Valdez—Earth Day/Bay Day at heritage Park 10 am—5 pm • Alexis Hunter—How much sales tax is used for parks? X. Identify items to be placed on next agenda—May 13, 2015 • Committee descriptions and re-do assignments • Accreditation Update • Special Events new ordinance—Laura Jasso, Special Events Coordinator will make presentation • Parkland Disposition • Well Med Update XI I.
