Members of the audience will be provided an opportunity to speak during
the meeting. A recording is made of the proceedings. You must first
identify yourself by name and address. Then state your point as briefly as
possible when addressing the Committee. Presentations will be limited to
three (3) minutes.
Any person who plans to attend this meeting and may need accommodation
is requested to contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 826-3147 at
least 48 hours in advance so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
MINUTES
I. Call to Order - Meeting was called to order by Isabel Odeh at 4:10
p.m.
II. Roll Call of Members - Members present: Marie Partington,
Apolonia Cantu, Shirley Tipton, Shirley Selz, Debbie Crites, Isabel
Odeh
III. Approval of Minutes - Minutes for last meeting were not available.
IV. Action on Absent Members - Amber Sayre resigned. Debbie Crites
will check to see if Christy Martinez can be replaced.
V. Public Comment: No Public Comment
Please be advised that the Open Meetings Act prohibits the Senior
Companion Program Advisory Committee from responding and
discussing your comments at length. The law only authorizes them
to do the following:
1. Make a statement of factual information;
2. Recite an existing policy in response to the inquiry; or
3. Advise the citizen that this subject will be placed on an
SCANNED
agenda at a later date.
VI. Presentation:
Shirley Selz, new advisory committee member was introduced. She is
a local attorney and has experience working with Youth Programs.
VII. New Business for Discussion and Possible Action
1. Recognition Event
Members discussed problems at Christmas Party--differences
in time scheduling for each of the different groups attending.
Committee advisory members discussed request be made to keep
future recognition events separate. Debbie Crites will forward
request to City's Senior Corps Management and will inform
Committee of results.
Annual Recognition Event will be scheduled in April or May;
time and place still to be decided on.
2. Presentation of Award Patches
Reviewed history of process of recognizing volunteers; process has
been unfair since only a few Volunteer Stations respond.
After extensive discussion, recommendation was made to award
four "Beyond the Call of Duty Awards" and one "Companion of
the Year Award". The award recipients would be nominated by peers,
Senior Companion Volunteer Supervisors and Volunteer Stations.
3. Criteria for earning "Beyond the Call of Duty" Patch and
"Companion of the Year Award" Patch
The "Beyond the Call of Duty Awards" would be presented
on a quarterly basis and Senior Companion Volunteer Supervisors
would make final decision. The "Companion of the Year Award"
would be selected by a separate committee after nomination forms
are submitted. An individual receiving the "Companion of the

Year Award" would not be eligible to receive this award two years
in a row.
Committee initially approved above recommendation, but prior
to the end of the meeting members agreed to have further
discussion at next meeting.
VIII. Identify Items to be Placed on Next Agenda
1. Develop new forms for recognition of monthly volunteer awards.
2. Announce date of Annual Recognition Event for 2011.
3. Decide whether number of committee members needs to be
increased.
4. Present options for Patch of Companion of the Year.
5. Make final decisions for monthly and annual recognition awards.
IX. Adjournment - Meeting was adjourned at 5:10 p.m. by Isabel
Odeh.
