Senior Companion Program (SCP)Advisory Committer
REGULAR MEETING FEB 11 2010
Thursday, October 29, 2009, 4:00 p.m.
Lindale Senior Center CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE
3135 Swantner Dr., Corpus Christi, TX
Members of the audience will be provided an opportunity to speak during
the meeting. A recording is made of the proceedings. You must first
identify yourself by name and address. Then state your point as briefly as
possible when addressing the Committee. Presentations will be limited to
three (3) minutes.
Any person who plans to attend this meeting and may need accommodation
is requested to contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 826-3147 at
least 48 hours in advance so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
MINUTES
I. Call to Order - Meeting was called to order by Isabel Odeh at 4:08 p.m.
II. Roll Call of Members - Members present: Marie Partington, Shirley
Tipton,Apolonia Cantu, Isabel Odeh and Steven Hensley
III. Approval of Minutes -Apolonia Cantu moved to accept minutes;
Shirley Tipton seconded the motion, and all approved noting the
need to correct Marie Partington's last name.
IV. Action of Absent Members- No action was taken.
V. Public Comment: No Public Comment
Please be advised that the Open Meetings Act prohibits the Senior
Companion Program Advisory Committee from responding and
discussing your comments at length. The law only authorizes them
to do the following:
1. Make a statement of factual information;
2. Recite an existing policy in response to the inquiry; or
3. Advise the citizen that this subject will be placed on an
Agenda at a later date.

VI. Presentation:
Steven Hensley.reported that the SCP Advisory Committee is
still needing additional committee members. Mr. Hensley presented
applications of interested members. Mr. Hensley and Isabel Odeh
will each contact a couple of applicants and/or other prospective
individuals who could be an asset to our Advisory Committee.
VII. New Business for Discussion and Possible Action
1. Determine Committee Member Terms (1 or 2 years) for
remaining 2 members - Deferred, since no additional
Committee members were present.
2. Elect a Vice Chair - Deferred.
3. Discuss new ideas for volunteer recruitment
- Steven Hensley gave report on trip to Alamo, Texas; ideas obtained
have already started to be implemented: They learned that Senior
Citizen apartments can be a valuable place to serve clients and
recruit volunteers since volunteers can often times serve their own
neighbors in need. The Housing Authority has already been
contacted locally, and has agreed to help SCP Volunteer Program
with their recruitment efforts.
-Mr. Hensley said that at least 55 SCP volunteers are needed, but
they prefer 65. He is in the process of developing a Recruitment
Plan, and will present it once it is finalized.
-Advertisement has been placed on Craig's List.
-Marie Partington said that in the past she was part of recruit-
ment efforts aimed at Senior Citizen Centers; she will continue
her current efforts of recruiting one on one.
-November 12, 2009 is Recruitment Day, and there will be
advertisement on the local television station Channel 3. .
4. Recommendations for new committee members
In addition to contacting interested applicants and
known community individuals, clarified ways to
encourage individuals we may be reaching out to
on how they can contribute their assistance as
SCP Advisory Committee Members.
5. Reminded Committee Members of Open Meetings
Training.
VIII. Identified items to be placed on next agenda.
Meeting changed to third Thursday of the month,
November 19, 2009 4:00-5:00 p.m. due to
Thanksgiving Holiday.
