CALL TO ORDER-The Monday,September 13, 1993 regular meeting of the Sister City Steering Committee was held at the City Hall, 6th Floor, 1201 Leopard St. The meeting was called to order at 6:10 p.m. by Dr. Glen Kost, General Chairman. II. ROLL CALL - Attendance was taken and a quorum was present. III. ACTION ON MINUTES - Sam Polk motioned to accept the minutes of the July 12, 1993 meeting. Michael Flores seconded the motion. Correction was made on section B by Mr. Fred Hoffman changing Ms. Doreen Lender of Auchen, Germany to Ms. Doreen Lender of Langons, Germany. IV. TREASURER'S REPORT - Marion Loucks reported that the General Fund operating budget is $20,000 (new budget year) with a balance of$19,739.58. The Trust Fund balance is $1,571.22. V. STUDENTS AND FAMILIES: Robert Irby, student at Ray High School, Mark Beltran, student at Moody High School and Vanessa Beard, student at Flour Bluff High School gave a brief report of their trip to Yokosuka, Japan (spoke of their Host families, the city, their excursions and the generosity of the Japanese and their curiosity about Corpus Christi). Jacob Padilla, Doug Matey and Adria Palacios reported on their visit to Veracruz; their host families, the city, their excursions in Veracruz and especially the food. SCANNED Jo Ann Lopez, Moody High School, Kathleen Tinning, I.W.A. George Gonzalez, Jr., Miller High School,and Shay Gilmore, King High School,reported on their trip to Toledo, Spain. The similarities between languages, their host families, their excursions in the city and the history and art of the city were highlights. VI. GENERAL COMMITTEE REPORTS A. RUSSIA; Mr. Km-tis Loomis reported that the Ukrainian Sister City Committee was interested in assisting Corpus Christi to establish an affiliation with Sevastopal, Ukraine. An informal letter from the Mayor will be sent to the Ukraninan Sister City Committee before September 19th, 1993. They will deliver the letter to Sevastopol. B. MONTERREY; Mr. Rudy Delgado stated that Monterrey had initiated interest in establishing a Sister City affiliation with Corpus Christi. They have a Friendship Fair scheduled for September 3, 1993 thru October 17, 1993. Mr. Rudy Delgado, Ms. Drue Coombs, Mr. Keith Arnold and Marion Loucks will be attending the fair. Mayor Mary Rhodes will attend the fair on October 5th and will present Monterrey with an official invitation for affiliation. C. VERACRUZ; Mr. Ramon Lopez stated that, in spite of some unorganized housing arrangements in Veracruz, the students had two recommendations to the Sister City Committee: (1) continue relationship with Veracruz and (2) increase communication between the Committee and Veracruz. Mr. Lopez made a motion that the Committee establish a relationship with the Mexican Consulate to bring cultural events to Corpus Christi from Mexico. Mr. Sam Polk seconded the motion and it was passed unanimously. The Veracruz committee consists of Ramon Lopez, Mary Saenz, Sam Polk,Lauro Cuellar and Joe Garcia. D. TOLEDO; A student art exhibit will take place in the Fall of'94. The Toledo Committee will be asking for art work from local students to submit to the exhibit. E. YOKOSUKA; Drue Combs reported that on August 25th and 26th, there were representatives from Yokosuka visiting Corpus Christi. The Port of Corpus Christi has sponsored a luncheon in their honor. The Yokosuka City Council members had requested a tour of the Lexington Museum. A second delagation visited the City September 10 to 12. Tomo Yamada, International Relations Division and her husband and friends were here on an informal visit. F. Drue Combs proposed a fund raising dinner honoring Mr. Harry Plomarity who is retiring from the Port of Corpus Christi. Drue Combs made a motion that the Sister City Committee sponsor a retirement dinner for Mr. Harry Plomarity, Mr. Ramon Lopez seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. VII. CURRENT CONCERNS 1. Map for Airport - Drue Combs spoke to Mr.Hext, Airport Director regarding the Sister City Map at the Airport.Early estimates for map,framing, etc.were$400. Ms. Combs will get additional bids. 2. - Mr. Joe Torres, Fred Hoffman, Drue Combs, Fernando Iglesias and Marion Loucks will present a workshop on the recent Sister City International Conference in Houston. VIII. ACTION ON ABSENCES - There are 5 vacancies and 5 members up for reappointment at the September 14 City Council meeting. Drue Combs presented Dr Glen Kost, Chairman, an international clock commemorating his service to the Sister City Committee and thanking Dr. Kost for the outstanding contributions he performed during his term. IX. ADJOURNAMENT - The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. M. on Loucks, Staff Liaison Sister City Steering Committee
