CALL TO ORDER - The Monday, October 4th, 1993 regular meeting of the Sister City Steering Committee was held in the Committee Room of City Hall. The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by Drue Combs, General Chairman. II. ROLL CALL - Attendance was taken and a quorum was present. III. ACTION ON SEPTEMBER 13.1993 MINUTES - A correction was made on Item 6 (C) Veracruz to read "In spite of some difficulty with housing arrangements" instead of "in spite of some unorganized housing arrangements". Michael Flores motioned to accept the minutes of the September 13, 1993 meeting as corrected. Johnnie Norman seconded the motion and the vote was unanimous. IV. TREASURERS REPORT - Marion Loucks reported that the General Fund operating budget remains at $19,739.58. The Trust Fund is $1,571.22. V. DISCUSSION ITEMS: A. APPROVAL TO HOST A RETIREMENT DINNER FOR HARRY PLOMARITY. Ramon Lopez motioned that a dinner honoring Mr. Harry Plomarity, retiring Port of Corpus Christi Director, be approved. Adrian Dansby seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Drue Combs stated that the February 5th date may need to be reconsidered. The dinner will be a fundraiser and that kind of event is traditionally held during the week because attendance is greater. B. RECOMMENDATION TO DEVELOP A YOUTH SOCCER TEAM TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MASTERCARD/SISTER CITIES INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT -The Sister City International Conference will be held in Louisville, KY. During the conference, Mastercard and Sister Cities International will host the first annual Mastercard World Cup Soccer Tournament. Joe Torres, as athletic chairman, will establish a subcommittee to secure funding and establish a boys and girls Corpus Christi team. He asked the Committee for approval to proceed SCANNED with this project. Fred Hoffman motioned that the request be approved and that Corpus Christi sponsor a team. Michael Flores seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. C. APPOINTMENT OF 1994 PROGRAM COMMITTEES - The appointments for the 1994 program committees are as follows: Rose Gunji, Vice Chairman for Keelung, Taiwan; Rudy Delgado, Vice Chairman for Monterrey, Mexico; Fernando Iglesias, Vice Chairman for Toledo, Spain; Ramon Lopez, Vice Chairman for Veracruz, Mexico; Johnnie Norman, Vice Chairman for Yokosuka,Japan; Kurtis Loomis, Vice Chairman for Russia/Ukraine; Fred Hoffman, Vice Chairman for Aachen, Germany; Mary Saenz, Student Exchange Activities; Michael Flores, Projects; Joe Torres, Athletics; and Kurtis Loomis, Selection Committee. VI. GENERAL COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Bicycle Tour Committee - Reporting for the bicycle tour sub-committee, Michael Flores suggested that the tour be.canceled and that a men's and women's Golf Tournament be sponsored by the Committee. The Committee unanimously approved the new project. B. Monterrey. Mexico - The official signing of the "Partners In Trade" agreement was held today, October 4th, 1993. Mayor Mary Rhodes and Mr. Rudy Delgado attended the Sister City Festival to be held all week in Monterrey, Mexico. C. Veracruz. Mexico - Ramon Lopez reported that the Veracruz committee met with the Mexican Consulate on September 27, 1993 to discuss potential joint programs. Mrs. Olay, Administrative Assistant to the Consulate, will research cultural programs from Mexico that my be currently touring in the United States. Possible projects are movies from Mexico, sculpture classes, anthropology seminars and teaching teachers how to teach spanish. Mr. Joe Morales, member of the Municipal Arts Commission, addressed the Sister City Committee regarding a major art exhibit of Mexican painters that will be sponsored by the Art Museum of South Texas and the Center for Hispanic Arts. As a member of the committee that is preparing for the exhibit, Mr. Morales extended an invitation to the Sister City Committee to particpate by complementing the exhibit with auxiliary programs such as the ones that Sister Cities may develop with the Mexican Consulate. Projects that bring in comparable artists or works in film, popular and classical movies, art history, literature, slides and/or performance arts have been discussed. D. Toledo. Spain - Mr. Joe Torres reported that he had been in contact with Mr. Oliver Luck of the National Football League regarding a volunteer project for U.S. coaches teaching football in Europe. The coaches' visit would be for 2 or 3 months during the U.S. school season. Spouses will also be transported and housed. The coaches would be expected to conduct workshops in football. The NFL would make all the necessary provisions for those coaches interested in participating. E. Yokosuka. Japan - Johnnie Norman reported that Mr. Hiroshi Sato would be arriving in Corpus Christi for a 3 day stay on Wednesday, October 20, 1993 at 2:17 p.m. and would be departing on Saturday 23, 1993 at 12:27 a.m. Ms. Chris Tinning volunteered to serve as the host family during Mr. Sato's visit. Mr. Sato is participating in the City of Yokosuka's Overseas Dispatch Training Course. He will spend two days with City hall staff and study various operations. VII. ACTION ON ABSENT MEMBERS - None.
