CALL TO ORDER- The Monday, November 1st, 1993 regular meeting of the Sister City Steering Committee was held in the Committee Room of City Hall. The meeting was called to order at 6:04 p.m. by Drue Combs, General Chairman. II. ROLL CALL - Attendance was taken and a quorum was present. III. ACTION ON OCTOBER 4TH, 1993 MINUTES - Fernando Iglesias requested that the minutes reflect his attendance as City Business in Toledo, Ohio. Michael Flores requested that the information recorded under Toledo be changed to Committee Reports-Athletics. Rudy Delgado was present at the September meeting. Jose Garcia was present at the October 4, 1993 meeting. , Michael Flores motioned to accept the minutes as corrected. Jose Garcia seconded the motion and the vote was unanimous. IV. TREASURERS REPORT - Marion Loucks: reported that the balance for the Trust Fund is $1,510.22 and the balance for the General Operating Fund is $19,670.85 as of September. Mrs. Elida Gonzalez requested information regarding disbursements on both accounts. Drue Combs requested copies of the 93-94 budget for.the next meeting. V. DISCUSSION ITEMS: CONSIDERATION OF PARTICIPATION WITH SISTER CITY INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE GRANT PROGRAMS; A. TRILATERAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM SPONSORED BY THE CENTER FOR GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP IN TOKYO. Drue Combs reported that the Trilateral exchange program would require the participation of Yokosuka,Japan,Corpus Christi,U.S.A. and Vera Cruz,Mexico. Drue Combs has sent two letters to Yokosuka regarding this exchange program and has not received a reply. The committee will not take further action on this project. B. U.S./JAPAN VOLUNTEERISM INTERNSHIP GRANT PROGRAM. Marion Loucks explained that the program isfor the exchange of professionals knowledgeable in the area of volunteerism. The grant will pay for the travel expenses. Johnnie Norman is to follow up with correspondence to Yokosuka regarding their interest in participating in this program. VI. GENERAL COMMITTEE REPORTS A. GERMANY - Fred Hoffman reported that he had sent a letter to the Sister City Committee of Aachen, Germany, regarding the possibility of a sister city affiliation and that it would be approximately three weeks before we could expect a reply. B. VERACRUZ, MEXICO - Ramon Lopez, Rudy Delgado and Joe Morales (Municipal Arts Commissioner) met with the Mexican Consul on October 12th, 1993. Mr. Lopez reported that the Consul was very interested in the promotion of the Mexican Art exhibit from San Francisco scheduled for the Art Museum of South Texas,March 18th-31st. In support of this exhibition,Mr. Lopez suggested that the committee assist in the arrangements for housing of the exhibit's guest artists. SCANNED C. TOLEDO,SPAIN- Fernando Iglesias reported that City Council member,Melody Cooper will be in Toledo on November 2, 1993. Mr. Iglesias also reported that Toledo is planning for next year's student exchange program. Mr. Iglesias' reported that he represented Corpus Christi in Toledo, Ohio for their "Two Toledos" celebration in October. Mr. Iglesias requested that it be noted that Ms. Elizabeth Sluhan showed exceptional hospitality to Mr. Iglesias during his visit - scheduling V.I.P. tours, dinners and an official meeting with the Mayor. Mr. Iglesias was recognized as an honorary citizen of Toledo, Ohio. D. YOKOSUKA, JAPAN - Johnnie Norman reported that Yokosuka, Japan's city employee, Hiroshi Sato visited Corpus Christi,Texas as a part of their Overseas Dispatch Training Program. Arriving October 20th, Mr. Sato was hosted by committee member Christine Tinning and scheduled for daily tours, dinners, meetings and entertainment until his departure on October 24th. E. MONTERREY. MEXICO - Rudy Delgado reported that Corpus Christi is now official Partners in Trade" with Monterrey, Mexico. He also reported that he and Mayor.Mary Rhodes had attended the International Sisterhood Week in Monterrey, Mexico. The Mayor of Monterrey is scheduled to visit Corpus Christi between the 14th and the 20th of November. Drue Combs asked Mr. Delgado, with the assistance of the Sister City Committee, to organize a reception in honor of the Mayor of Monterrey's visit. F. PROJECTS COMMITTEE - Michael Flores reported that the Golf Tournament Committee met an October 13th, to discuss sponsorship categories and a tentative date of April 16, 1994. Mr. Flores requested assistance for the solicitation of sponsors. G. RETIREMENT DINNER FOR HARRY PLOMARITY- Drue Combs appointed Elida Gonzalez chairperson of the committee to organize the retirement dinner for Mr. Harry Plomarity. She will be assisted by Fernando Iglesias, Johnnie Norman, Adrian Dansby, and Lauro Cuellar. The date has been tentatively set for February 5th. H. ATHLETICS - Jose Torres reported that the Coastal Bend Soccer Association has two teams interested in participating in the Mastercard International/Sister Cities Cup in Louisville, Kentucky, July 26-30, 1994. Mr. Tones suggested that the committee solicit sponsorships from Mastercard International member banks locally to support the participation by these teams. Mr. Torres reported that Ernest Bustamante from Freer, Texas is the only applicant to respond to the National Football League volunteer project for U.S. coaches to teach football in Europe for three months. VII. CURRENT CONCERNS A. Drue Combs requested that each Sister City Committee Member make two lists on a sheet of paper; one listing everything we know about sister city activities that have been done; and the other listing what we could do if money were not a problem. B. Drue Combs requested confirmation of a city council liaison for the Sister City Committee by the next meeting. C. Drue Combs requested the reorder of sister city lapel pins, and Michael Flores recommended engraved name badges. VIII.
