I. CALL TO ORDER - The Monday, June 6, 1994 meeting of the Sister City Steering
Committee was held in the Committee Room of City Hall. The meeting was called
to order at 6:15 p.m. by Drue Combs, General Chairperson.
II. ROLL CALL - Attendance was taken and a quorum was present.
III. ACTION ON MAY 2, 1994 MINUTES - Ramon Lopez motioned to accept the
minutes of the May 2, 1994 meeting. Jose Garcia seconded the motion, and the vote
was unanimous.
IV. TREASURERS' REPORT- Marion Loucks reported that there was $15,934.60 in the
General Fund and $3,639.61 in the Trust Fund.
V. DISCUSSION ITEMS:
A. Discussion regarding a request for leave of absence by committee member,
Allie Young. Michael Flores motioned that the committee allow Allie Young a six
month leave of absence. Ramon Lopez seconded the motion, and the vote was
unanimous. Drue Combs requested that Rose Gunji and Sam Polk review and
develop policies for future requests for leave of absence by a committee member.
B. Discussion on hosting a welcome reception for the nine educators participating
in the "Vacation Plan-Mexico 1994" program (July 5 - August 1, 1994). Ramon
Lopez reported the progress on the arrangements for the "Vacation Plan-Mexico
1994" program. Ramon Lopez reported that housing has been secured for eight of
the nine Mexican educators participating in the program. Yvonne Haag announced
that the Mexican Consulate has offered to provide the food for a welcome reception
honoring the nine educators, and that the Sister City Committee would be
responsible for providing the dessert and beverage. Joe Garcia motioned that the
committee co-host the reception honoring the Mexican educators with the Mexican
Consulate. Adrian Dansby seconded the motion, and the vote was unanimous.
C. Discussion regarding the Sister City Committee's involvement in securing
accommodations for a performing folk dance group from Mexico City. Ramon
Lopez motioned that the Sister City Committee make a commitment to secure host
families for nine of the forty-one dancers/musicians coming from Mexico City to
perform at the Corpus Christi Feria de las Flores pageant. Mr. Lopez also
volunteered to chair the housing effort. Sam Polk seconded the motion, and the vote
was unanimous.
D. Discussion on the conditions for approved member attendance at the Sister
Cities International Conference. No action was taken.

E. Request for an additional $300 for the 1994 stuuunt exchange activities.
Mary Saenz, activities chairperson, motioned to increase the 1994 student exchange
activities allocation of $1300 to include an additional $300 for scheduled activities,
plus $200 to include the nine Mexican educators and their host families at the
welcome barbecue party ($1,800 total). John Marez seconded the motion, and the
vote was unanimous.
VI. GENERAL COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. TOLEDO, SPAIN - Fernando Iglesias reported that the Estudiantina from
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, under the direction of Dr. Leo Carrillo, recently
returned from performing in Spain. Mr. Iglesias also reported that Dr. Carrillo was
successful in initiating a college student exchange with Aldeacentenera, Spain.
Fernando Iglesias announced that the exchange of Toledo high school students for
this summer's exchange has not been confirmed.
B. VERACRUZ, MEXICO - Ramon Lopez reported that the Spanish language
course to be offered by Ms. Edna Brown has been rescheduled to June 20 - 24th.
Mr. Lopez also reported that correspondence has been made with Veracruz
regarding the student exchange program, and he is awaiting response. Mr. Lopez
announced that the Mexican Consulate in Corpus Christi has volunteered to assist
with communications between Corpus Christi and Veracruz, Mexico.
Mr. Lopez announced that a special art collection from Cuernavaca, Mexico, entitled,
Grupo Strempler will be exhibited at the Multicultural Center during the month of
June. (The exhibition is a collaborative effort between the City of Corpus Christi and
the Mexican Consulate.)
C. YOKOSUKA, JAPAN - Drue Combs, reporting for Johnnie Norman
announced that the deadline for applications for the Volunteer Internship Program
has been extended to June 17, 1994. Ms. Combs requested recommendations for
potential candidates with volunteer experience.
D. PROJECTS COMMITTEE- Michael Flores reported that all sponsorships for
the Golf Tournament have been collected except for the donation from Coastal
Refining.
Flores requested that discussion regarding an allocation of funds for special projects
be held at the July meeting.
E. ATHLETICS COMMITTEE - Joe Torres reported that the local team to
participate in the Sister Cities International Soccer Tournament is confirmed and
its fundraising projects are going well.
VII. ACTION ON ABSENT MEMBERS - Sam Polk motioned to terminate the
membership of Christopher Hinojosa. Seconded by John Marez, the vote was
unanimous. Michael Flores motioned to terminate the membership of Lauro Cuellar.
Seconded by Joe Garcia, the vote was unanimous. Sam Polk motioned that Fred
Hoffman be contacted regarding his membership and for the status on the Aachen,
Germany affiliation. Fernando Iglesias seconded the motion, and the vote was
unanimous.
VIII. ADJOURNMENT - The meetin as adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
