I. CALL TO ORDER - The Monday, April 4, 1994 meeting of the Sister City Steering
Committee was held in the Committee Room of City Hall. The meeting was called
to order at 6:15 p.m. by Drue Combs, General Chairperson.
II. ROLL CALL - Attendance was taken and a quorum was present.
III. ACTION ON MARCH 7, 1994 MINUTES - Ramon Lopez motioned to accept the
minutes of the March 7, 1994 meeting as corrected by Drue Combs to read "March
7th instead of March 10th" on the heading of the minutes. Johnnie Norman
seconded the motion, and the vote was unanimous.
IV. TREASURERS' REPORT - No report given.
V. DISCUSSION ITEMS:
A. Request for financial assistance in the amount of $600 by the two area youth
soccer teams to participate in the Mastercard International/Sister Cities Cup in
Louisville, Kentucky. Joe Torres introduced the boy's soccer team (16 years and
under) and their parents that will participate in the Mastercard International/Sister
Cities Cup in Louisville on July 26 - 28, 1994. Ms. Annette Coffee, team parent,
informed the committee that the girl's (12 years and under) team would not be able
to participate in the tournament due to a lack of registration in that particular age
group. Ms. Tara Mylett, team parent, reported to the committee that the boy's team
had been accepted and that they would be competing against a team from Africa.
Ms. Mylett presented a design for the team T-Shirts and requested a City of Corpus
Christi flag for the competition. Ms. Mylett requested assistance in promoting the
team's participation in the tournament, and suggested having an exhibition game
(against the media or another team) at Buc Stadium. Joe Torres made the motion
that the Sister City Committee pay for the registration fee ($300) for the boy's team
(16 and under) and for the team's T-Shirts (estimated $200) from the trust fund.
Rose Gunji seconded the motion, and the vote was unanimous.
B. Discussion of a proposal by the Mexican Consul regarding a program that
provides educators from Mexico who will live in Corpus Christi and work with the
youth during the summer. Ramon Lopez introduced Ms. Sandra Olay, assistant to
the Mexican Consulate, to report on the "Mexico-Vacation Plan 1994". Ms. Olay
explained that the program was organized by the General Headquarters for the
Development of Athletics, Office of Formation and Training of Human Resources
from Mexico and proposed by the Mexican Consul in Corpus Christi. Ms. Olay

announced that fourteen educators (7 male and 7 female) will visit Corpus Christi
during the month of July and the first week of August. The 14 educators are to work
with the City of Corpus Christi Park and Recreation Department's summer youth
program providing instruction in the Spanish Language, Mexican cultural arts, crafts,
music, and other recreational activities. The 14 educators would also provide
assistance for the Multicultural Center's summer youth program "Passport to
Understanding".
Mr. Lopez announced that it had been suggested that the responsibility for housing
and transportation for the 14 educators be assumed by other educators involved in
the Park and Recreation summer programs. (The responsibility for soliciting host
families has not been officially assumed by the City of Corpus Christi Park and
Recreation Department).
Rudy Delgado announced that the Corpus Christi Seminary may provide housing if
necessary.
No action was taken regarding the committee's involvement with the solicitation of
host families. Drue Combs suggested that the committee recognize the visit of the
14 educators with a public reception.
VI. GENERAL COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. MONTERREY, MEXICO - Rudy Delgado reported that the "College for Kids"
program was unsuccessful and that the committee would need to try to promote and
support this program early next year.
B. YOKOSUKA, JAPAN - No report.
C. TOLEDO, SPAIN - Fernando Iglesias reported that a letter has been sent to
Toledo informing Ms. Rosario de Paz, Office of Protocol, of the dates for the 1994
student exchange program.
Mr. Iglesias also shared photographs taken of the "Passport to Understanding"
program at the 1993 Sister Cities International Conference in Houston,Texas.
D. VERACRUZ,MEXICO - Ramon Lopez reported that the correspondence on the
Corpus Christi exchange students will be mailed to Veracruz. Mr. Lopez also
announced that the Spanish language course schedule that was presented to the
Corpus Christi students was acceptable and that even an alternate student in the
exchange program showed interest in participating.
E. PROJECTS COMMITTEE - Michael Flores reported that the committee was in
the final preparation stages for the golf tournament. Mr. Flores reported that the
tournament had received good media coverage including Channels 3, 10 and a
segment on the 'Total Rec" program on TCI cablevision. Mr. Flores reported that
Ms.Johnnie Norman had done an excellent job in soliciting sponsors and door prizes.
Mr. Flores requested volunteers to assist at the tournament. Ms. Norman also
suggested that the students that will participate in the exchange program serve as
volunteers.
F. Student Exchange Activities - No report given.
G. Selection Committees - Adrian Dansby reported that the students selected to

participate in the Sister City Student Exchange Program were exceptional and would
represent Corpus Christi well. Mr. Dansby also reported that all went well at the
announcement reception for the student exchange program on March 24, 1994.
VII. HEAR FROM THE PUBLIC - Ms. Rose Gunji introduced her guests, Ms. Elizabeth
Sluhan, Vice Chairman from Sister City Committee in Toledo, Ohio and two students
from Spain. The two students were visiting from Madrid and Barcelona, Spain. The
students shared their experiences here in the United States and spoke of the
differences in culture, environment, education, and economy from both countries.
VIII. CURRENT CONCERNS
Discussion was held regarding the delegates that will be attending the Sister City
International Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Further discussion will be
scheduled for the May 2, 1994 meeting.
IX. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
