I. CALL TO ORDER - The Monday, July 11, 1994 meeting of the Sister City Steering
Committee was held in the Committee Room of City Hall. The meeting was called
to order at 6:15 p.m. by Drue Combs, General Chairperson.
II. ROLL CALL - Attendance was taken and a quorum was present.
III. ACTION ON JUNE 6, 1994 MINUTES - Ramon Lopez motioned to accept the
minutes of the June 6, 1994 meeting. Fernando Iglesias seconded the motion, and
the vote was unanimous.
IV. TREASURERS' REPORT - Marion Loucks reported that there was $4,099.08 in the
General Fund and $2,160.03 in the Trust Fund.
V. DISCUSSION ITEMS:
A. Discussion regarding an allocation of funds in the Sister City Trust Fund for
special projects. Michael Flores motioned that the Sister City Committee place
$1,000 in reserve from the Trust Fund for future projects. Johnnie Norman seconded
the motion, and discussion was held regarding the general purpose of the Trust Fund.
The vote was unanimous.
VI. GENERAL COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. TOLEDO, SPAIN - Fernando Iglesias reported that Toledo, Spain will send
four students (2 females and 2 males) for the student exchange program. Mr. Iglesias
explained that the Toledo students will stay in Corpus Christi for one month and that
the host families have agreed to this arrangement.
Mr. Iglesias also reported that an art collection by Spanish artist, Charo Misas, may
be available for exhibition in Corpus Christi.
B. VERACRUZ, MEXICO - Ramon Lopez reported that the Spanish language
course offered by Ms. Edna Brown was completed and that an evaluation of the
course should be conducted for future consideration.
Mr. Lopez announced that a special art collection from Cuernavaca, Mexico, entitled,
Grupo Strempler, is being exhibited at the Multicultural Center. The exhibition is a
collaborative effort between the City of Corpus Christi and the Mexican Consulate.
Ramon Lopez reported that the folk dance group from Mexico City that was
scheduled to perform at the "Feria de las Flores" has been canceled.
SCANNED
Ramon Lopez introduced the nine educators who would be participating in the ,
Vacation Plan-Mexico 1994", and Mr. Joe Morales, participating host and English
instructor.
C. YOKOSUKA,JAPAN- Johnnie Norman introduced Ms. Vicki Villarreal. Ms.
Villarreal was selected to participate in the Volunteerism Internship Program
sponsored by Sister Cities International (scheduled for October 1994). Ms. Norman
announced that a host family will be needed to host the Japanese volunteer intern
here in Corpus Christi.
Ms. Norman reported that two delegations from Yokosuka, Japan visited Corpus
Christi during the month of June. The Defense Association, June 19 & 20, and
members of the Yokosuka City Council, June 20 and 21, 1994.
Ms. Norman also announced that the Mayor of Yokosuka will visit Corpus Christi
in October 1994.
D. ATHLETICS COMMITTEE - Joe Torres reported the status of his
fundraising efforts for the soccer team to participate in the Sister Cities International
Soccer Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. The soccer team was present to exhibit
the team T-shirts that were funded by the Sister City Committee through the Trust
Fund. Ms. Tara Mylett, team parent, was present to request assistance by the Sister
City Committee for new uniforms for the soccer team and for gifts (Corpus Christi:
t-shirt, cap, pennant, etc.) to exchange with the first team they compete against in the
tournament.
Ms. Mylett also requested assistance with publicity for the team's participation in the
tournament. Staff is to assist with a press release on the team's departure.
E. STUDENT EXCHANGE ACTIVITIES: Mary Saenz reported the status of the
activities for the student exchange program. Yvonne Haag announced that Christina
Tinning, committee member and student host, had offered to take her host students
along on an extra trip to New Braunfels, Texas on August 3rd if the committee
approved. Johnnie Norman said that one of the Yokosuka exchange students had
also planned a side trip on August 3rd. The committee discussed the situations and
agreed that the families and students should adhere to the planned schedule of
activities except for emergencies.
VII. CURRENT CONCERNS - Rudy Delgado announced that the Area Economic
Development Corporation and the Mexican Consulate were planning a major art
exhibition to be displayed at city art institutions and galleries. Mr. Delgado
explained that host families may be needed for participating artists, curators and
professionals.
VIII. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
