REGULAR MEETING

I. CALL TO ORDER- The Monday, August 1, 1994 meeting of the Sister City Steering
Committee was held in the Committee Room of City Hall. The meeting was called
to order at 6:00 p.m. by Drue. Combs, General Chairperson.
II. ROLL CALL - Attendance was taken and a quorum was present.
III. ACTION ON JULY 11, 1994 MINUTES - Ramon Lopez motioned to accept the
minutes of the July 11, 1994 meeting. Joe Garcia seconded the motion, and the vote
was unanimous.
IV. TREASURERS' REPORT - Yvonne Haag reported that there was $20,000 in the
General Fund and $2,172.03 in the Trust Fund. •
V. GENERAL COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. SISTER CITIES INTERNATIONAL - Drue Combs reported on the Sister
Cities International Conference in Louisville, Kentucky (July 27-31, 1994). Ms.
Combs announced that a workshop to discuss the information collected at the
conference will be held on October 8, 1994.
B. TOLEDO, SPAIN- Michael Flores reported that three students (1 female and
2 males) from Toledo, Spain had arrived and were participating in the student
exchange program.
C. VERACRUZ, MEXICO - Ramon Lopez reported that four students (3 female
and 1 male) from Veracruz, Mexico had arrived and were also participating in the
student exchange program.
Mr. Lopez reported that the nine Mexican educators participating in the Vacation
Plan - Mexico '94 were scheduled to depart on August 1, 1994. Mr. Lopez expressed
his gratitude to the cooperating host families, Joe Morales, Roger and Esperanza
Lopez, Rose Gunji, and his wife, Elsa Lopez, for their generosity and hospitality.
D. YOKOSUKA,JAPAN-Johnnie Norman reported that four students (2 female
and 2 male) from Yokosuka,Japan had arrived and were participating in the student
exchange program. Ms. Norman also expressed concern regarding host family

arrangements, and suggested that in the future alternate host families be secured in
case of emergencies.
Ms. Norman recognized Vicki Villarreal, representative for the Volunteerism
Internship Program to Yokosuka, Japan. Drue Combs suggested that.Ms. Villarreal
contact the Consul General's Office of Japan, located in Houston,Texas to introduce
herself and for Japanese reference information and materials.
E. SEVASTOPAL, UKRAINE - Drue Combs reported that an affiliation with
Sevastopal, Ukraine is still a possibility, and that communication should continue.
F. AACHEN, GERMANY- Drue Combs reported that Fred Hoffmann(advisory
member) had informed her that an official response from Aachen, Germany could
be anticipated within the month of August.
G. PU YANG, CHINA - Ms. Combs reported that Pu Yang is still planning to
send a delegation to Texas, and is interested in a sister city relationship with Corpus
Christi.
H. STUDENT EXCHANGE - Ramon Lopez reported that the activities for the
student exchange program were off to a good start with a successful welcome
reception at West Guth Park.
Yvonne Haag, reporting for Mary Saenz, announced that the funds for the activities
were not released in the manner requested, making the payment process difficult.
The Committee agreed that further discussion regarding the payment process for the
1995 student exchange program activities should be considered during the program
evaluation.
I. PROJECTS COMMITTEE - No report from Michael Flores. Drue Combs
suggested the sale of a promotional "tote bag" with the Sister City logo. Other
promotional and fundraising ideas were shared including the sale of memberships
and the sale of coupon books.
J. ATHLETICS COMMITTEE -Drue Combs reported the outcome of the Great
Western Eagles Soccer Team that participated in the Sister Cities International
Soccer Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. Jose Torres announced that committee
members collected donations in the amount of$400, and KRIS TV 6 donated $1,000
toward the purchase of new uniforms for the soccer team.
VI. • CURRENT CONCERNS: Michael Flores expressed concern on the behalf of the
visiting students from Spain. Mr. Flores explained that the students were not aware
1-1-^ the other visiting students (from Yokosuka and Mexico) would present Mayor
::Modes with a gift, and suggested that this information be communicated in the
future.
VII. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting was adjourned at 6:55 p.m.
