I. CALL TO ORDER - The Monday, January 16th, 1995 meeting of the Sister City
Steering Committee was held in the Committee Room of City Hall. The meeting
was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Drue Combs, General Chairperson.
II. ROLL CALL - Attendance was taken and a quorum was present.
III. ACTION ON DECEMBER 5, 1994 MEETING MINUTES - Drue Combs requested '
that the minutes be amended to reflect thecorrect spelling of the word "student" in
Section VIII C. Michael Flores motioned to approve the minutes of the December
5, 1994 meeting as corrected. Johnnie Norman seconded the motion, and the vote
was unanimous.
IV. TREASURER'S REPORT Marion Loucks reported that the Trust Fund was
$2,404.65, and the General Fund was $17,969.26 for October, 1994, $16,954.08 for
November, 1994, and $16,871.93 as of December, 1994.
V. DISCUSSION ITEM:
A. Discussion regarding the initiation of a student exchange program with
Monterrey, Mexico.
Rudy Delgado motioned that Corpus Christi start a student exchange program
with Monterrey, Mexico following similar guidelines for the current student
exchange program. Michael Flores and Ramon Lopez seconded the motion,
and the vote was unanimous.
B. Discussion on priorities for the Sister City Committee:
1) Dedicate city parks to Sister Cities (Michael Flores, Elida Gonzalez, and
Jerry Barker) -Michael Flores reported that the procedure to dedicate a new,
or rename an existing city park involves a process of approvals-beginning first
with a recommendation by the Sister City Committee, then approvals by the
Park and Recreation Advisory Committee and the City Council. Staff will
provide a list of city parks for consideration.
2) Bayfest (Joe Garcia and John Marez) - Report February meeting.

3) Expand student exchange program (Johnnie Norman and Rose Gunji) -
Johnnie Norman reported the proposed dates for the 1995 Yokosuka student
exchange program: July 14 to August 2 for Corpus Christi students traveling
to Yokosuka; and Yokosuka students to travel to Corpus.Christi.from August
2 to August 21. Ms. Norman proposed that the Corpus Christi student
activities be scheduled for August 5 through August 13.
4) Expand support network (John Marez) - Report February meeting.
5) Sister.City signs at entrance to city(Dolores DeLeon) - Ms.DeLeon reported
that she sent a letter to the City Traffic Engineering Department requesting
information and/or requirements for erecting a sign at the entrance to the
city. Ms. DeLeon will report more at February meeting.
6) Display area for memorabilia (Elida Gonzalez) - Ms. Gonzalez reported that
she has contacted the Corpus Christi Museum and will continue research for
a location.
7) Name a city street for a Sister City (Adrian Dansby and,Fernando Iglesias) -.
Report February meeting.
8) Provide city pins for exchange students (Drue Combs and staff) - Ms. Combs
reported that the pins were presented in 1994 to exchange students and
requests assistance from staff to obtain pins again for 1995 exchange students.
9) "College for Kids" (Rudy Delgado) - tabled until 1996.
VI. COMMITTEE REPORTS:
A. TOLEDO,SPAIN-Fernando Iglesias reported that he is working with Toledo
and Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi representatives for a possible graduate
student exchange program in the field of Marine Biology.
Mr. Iglesias reported that discussions are continuing with artist, Charo Misas and the
Art Museum of South Texas for an exhibit late in 1995.
Mr. Iglesias reported that a local French association, "Alliance Francias" has offered
its support in initiating a sister city affiliation with the City of Agen, France.
Discussion to be held at the February meeting.
B. VERACRUZ, MEXICO - Ramon Lopez reported that dates for the Veracruz
student exchange program are to be established. Mr. Lopez also reported that a
letter has been received from a Beeville Ballet Folkloric Dance group asking for the
endorsement by the City of Corpus Christi and the Sister City Committee for the
dance group's proposal to host an International Ballet Folkloric Dance conference
in Corpus Christi in July 1996. Mr. Lopez will respond on behalf of the Sister City
Committee endorsing the Beeville Ballet in their bid for the conference.
C. YOKOSUKA, JAPAN - Johnnie Norman reported that Makoto Aiso,
representative for Yokosuka Overseas Dispatch Training Program,will be in Corpus
Christi February 2nd - February 8th and that a host family is needed.
D. ISRAEL - Drew Combs reported that she received a postcard from a
representative of the City of Rishon-Le-Zion requesting an invitation to visit Corpus
Christi.

E. PROJECTS - Michael Flores reported that the plans for the 2nd annual City
of Corpus Christi Sister City Invitational Golf Tournament have begun, and the date
is set for April 22, 1995. Mr. Flores requested participation and assistance from the
entire committee with fundraising efforts.-
F. SELECTION COMMITTEE - Drue Combs announced that Adrian Dansby
has agreed to serve as chairman of the student exchange selection committee for
1995.
G. NEWSLETTER - John Marez reported that he still needs information from
a few committees and requested assistance editing the final draft.
VII. CURRENT CONCERNS:
SISTER CITY WATCHES-Yvonne Haag reported that the Sister City wristwatches
are now available at a cost of $28 each.
VIII. HEAR FROM THE PUBLIC: None present.
IX. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
