CALL TO ORDER- The Monday, March 6, 1995 meeting of the Sister City Steering Committee was held in the Committee Room of City Hall. The meeting was called to order at 6:08 p.m. by Drue Combs, General Chairperson. II. ROLL CALL - Attendance was taken and a quorum was present. III. ACTION ON FEBRUARY 6, 1995 MEETING MINUTES - Sam Polk motioned to accept the minutes of February 6, 1995 meeting as received. Dolores DeLeon seconded the motion, and the vote was unanimous. IV. TREASURER'S REPORT - Yvonne Haag reported that the Trust Fund remains at $2,404.65, and the General Fund was $16,871.93 as of January, 1995. V. COMMITTEE REPORTS: A. PROJECTS COMMITTEE - Michael Flores reported that promotional and registration materials for the Sister City Golf Tournament are available. Mr. Flores requested assistance from committee members to distribute the information to the public and local businesses. Michael Flores reported that he, Drue Combs, and staff met with the City Park and Recreation Department.Director, Malcolm Matthews,to discuss the renaming of Palmetto Park in honor of the international Sister City affiliations. Mr. Flores also reported that Mr. Matthews discussed possibilities of a collaboration by the Sister City .Steering Committee, Municipal Arts Commission, and the Park Board for a Bayfront Park project. Mr.Flores announced that the Projects Committee would like to pursue both - the renaming of the Palmetto Park and the involvement in a Bayfront Park project. Mr. Flores requested further discussion and action on a recommendation for a specific name for the park at the April meeting. SCANNED Sister City Committee March 6, 1995 Page 2 B. MONTERREY, MEXICO - Rudy Delgado reported that Monterrey has requested a one (1) year extension to begin a student exchange program due to the recent economic difficulties in Mexico. C. TOLEDO, SPAIN - Fernando Iglesias reported that artist, Charo Misas, continues plans for an exhibit in Corpus Christi in late 1995. Mr. Iglesias reported that a group of six (6) Spanish artists have proposed to exhibit paintings and sculptures in Corpus Christi during the month of June or July, 1995, providing that a suitable exhibit location and lodging can be arranged. Mr. Iglesias also reported that a letter was received from a student in Toledo, Spain requesting assistance from the Sister City Committee for information on advanced English courses in Corpus Christi. Mr. Iglesias will contact Del Mar College for information. D. AGEN,FRANCE - Fernando Iglesias reported that a letter has been received from the Mayor of Agen expressing a desire to pursue a Sister City affiliation with Corpus Christi. Alliance Francaise representative, Fredericha Dureau, offered assistance to the city staff by translating a response to the Mayor of Agen. E. VERACRUZ, MEXICO - Yvonne Haag, reporting for Ramon Lopez, announced that a letter was sent in response to the fax received from Veracruz officials regarding the development and expansion of exchange programs. F. YOKOSUKA, JAPAN - None given. G. RISHON-LE-ZION, ISRAEL - Jerry Barker reported that a letter has been prepared and will be sent extending an official invitation to Rishon-Le-Zion representatives to visit Corpus Christi. H. ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE - Drue Combs, reporting for Mary Saenz, updated the activities calendar for the student exchange program. -Humberto Tijerina-suggested-that -local civic organizations be invited to participate in scheduled student exchange activities. I. SELECTION COMMITTEE - Adrian Dansby reported that 21 candidates have been submitted by the city's high schools for the student exchange program. Mr. Dansby also reported that the selection interview meetings will be held on March 28 and 29, and the announcement reception will be held March 30, 1995. SISTER CITY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION - Drue Combs reported that the Sister City International Convention will be held July 26-29, 1995 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Further discussion at the April meeting. K. TEACHER EXCHANGE -Toni Medina reported that CCISD would consider an exchange program to include candidates with comparable credentials and experience. Ms. Medina reported a lack of interest from the teachers she approached about the possibility of a teacher exchange program. Ms. Medina will continue to research and to explore other programs to include teaching professionals. VI. CURRENT CONCERNS: None expressed. VII. HEAR FROM THE PUBLIC: Members of"Alliance Francaise"were present to offer assistance and express support for a sister city affiliation in France. VIII.
