CALL TO ORDER — The May 3, 1999 regular meeting of the Sister City Steering
Committee was called to order at 6:09 p.m.
ROLL CALL—The roll was called and the recording secretary announced a quorum
was present.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES—Chair Reta called for the approval of the regular meeting
minutes of April 5, 1999 with a correction. Chair Reta asked to correct "Charles Tamez
moved to adjourn"to "John Marez moved to adjourn." Ramon Lopez moved to accept
the minutes of April 5, 1999 as corrected. Toni Lucario seconded and the motion carried.
TREASURER'S REPORT—Marion Loucks, staff liaison,reported the balance of the
Trust Fund as $5,733.85. Ms. Loucks also reported on the balance of the General Fund,
which is $17,452.78.
(Chair Reta introduced Ms. Blanca Becerra, exchange student Omar Becerra's mother,
Ms. Rachel Peterson and exchange student Clint Peterson and exchange student, Rosa
Obregon. Chair Reta also welcomed guests, Edna Brown and Nicole Vilencia.)
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Agen,France—Charles Tamez reported that the student exchanges will be from June
30th to July 21St
(Yalee Shih &Elizabeth Iglesias arrived at 6:23 p.m.)
Monterrey,Mexico—Rudy Delgado reported student exchanges would be from July 11th
and 25th. (Note: These dates were adjusted to July 14th to July 28th
Veracruz,Mexico—Marion Loucks reported for Joe Garcia that the Veracruz students
met with the Mexican Consulate. Veracruz has not selected students or dates yet.
Toledo, Spain-Elizabeth Iglesias reported there will be a ceremony at the Bias de La
Garza Falcon Friendship Monument honoring cultures and heritage of Spain at 1:00 p.m.
on Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at 7:30 p.m.

Yokosuka,Japan—Gary Hansen reported the student exchange would be from July 14`h
to 28th (Corpus Christi) and July 28th to August 11th (Japanese).
Keelung,Taiwan—Yalee Shih reported student exchange will be from July 14th to 28`h.
Activities Committee—Mary Saenz reported the dates for the activities during the
student exchange. Nicole Vilencia volunteered to take the students to Wayne's World
Safari at noon. Ramon Lopez volunteered to accompany the students to the Texas State
Aquarium. Ms. Saenz also reported the farewell party would be held at the Bayfront
Convention Center in room 222. Drue Combs moved to accept the activity agenda.
Charles Tamez seconded and the motion carried.
Ms. Saenz also reported they would be ordering cowboy hats for the students this year.
Projects Committee—Chair Reta reported the awards ceremony for the Young Artists
Competition was held April 11, 1999 at the South Texas Institute for the Arts.
(VIP participants, Nicole Vilencia and Drue Combs gave a presentation on their visit to
Yokosuka, Japan.)
(Rachel Gonzales left at 6:49 p.m. & Charles Tamez left at 7:17 p.m)
Drue Combs suggested moving the VIP exchange to Yokosuka to the fall because the
change of officers in their city that occurs in the spring.
(Gary Hansen left at 7::22 p.m)
Fundraiser Committee—Chair Reta reported the"Taste of Sister City—Spain"would
be held June 17, 1999 at the Bayfront Plaza Banquet Hall at 6 p.m. (Please note: This
event has since been moved to October). Chair Reta also informed the Committee there
would be a silent auction. Toni Lucario and Rachel Gonzales have agreed to help get
donations for the silent auction.
Mary Saenz suggested having the more expensive tables closer to the entertainment.
Eight will be seated to a table. Ms. Saenz also suggested using the incentive, for every
table a committee member sells, they receive one free ticket to the fundraiser.
Chair Reta announced four people have been approved to attend the Convention in Little
Rock, Arkansas. Drue Combs suggested those committee members interested in
attending the convention send a letter or fax to Lucy Reta.
Ramon Lopez asked whether the Committee was going to send exchange students who
could pay their own way. The Committee decided it was too late in the year to begin that
process and would wait until next year to initiate that part of the program.

HEAR FROM THE PUBLIC -- Chair Reta introduced Edna Brown. Ms. Brown
informed the Committee that Hagen, Germany has notified her of their desire to host the
Sister City Committee. Ms. Brown stressed the need of communication between the
Committee and Germany. Drue Combs informed the Committee that she and Rose Gunji
are planning on going to Germany in June.
(Yalee-Shih left at 7:41 p.m.)
Chair Reta said she would organize a trip to Germany for the Committee in the
September 20 through 27th timeframe.
ADJOURNMENT—As there was no further business, Chair Reta called for an
adjournment. Ramon Lopez moved to adjourn. Drue Combs seconded and the motion
carried. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
