APPROVAL OF MINUTES —Chair Reta called for the approval of the regular meeting minutes of May 3, 1999. Elida Gonzales requested "Brussels, Germany" be changed to "Brussels,Belgium." Chair Reta approved the minutes of June 7, 1999 as corrected. TREASURER'S REPORT — Marion Loucks, staff liaison, reported the balance of the Trust Fund as $4,432.50 and the balance of the General Fund is $3,085.08. DISCUSSION ITEM A. Consideration of parks that could be named for the City's Sister City Program. Chair Reta opened discussion on the consideration of parks that could be named for the City's Sister City Program. Chair Reta informed the Committee that"she has spoken with one of the councilman regarding the park located behind the courthouse. Chair suggested the park could be used as a tribute to our Sister Cities. The location of this park would provide more visibility for Sister City. Chair Reta suggested petitioning the City Council to acquire that parkland. (Gary Hansen arrived at 6:18 p.m) Chair Reta called for a motion and Sue Delaney motioned that the Committee attempt to get the parkland. Minta Moore seconded and the motion carried. COMMITTEE REPORTS Toledo, Spain — Elizabeth Iglesias reported the students are doing well. July 21, 1999 the students from Toledo will arrive and leave on August 11, 1999. Agen, France—No report. Sister City Steering Coimiiittee Special-Called Meeting—July 12, 1999 Page 2 of 3 Monterrey, Mexico — Rudy Delgado reported his student would leave on Wednesday. The Monterrey exchange student will arrive on July 28, 1999. Yokosuka,Japan—Gary Hansen reported his exchange students leave Wednesday. Keelung, Taiwan — Yalee Shih reported she has just returned from Keelung. Her exchange students will leave on the July 14, 1999 and return on the 28`h. The Keelung exchange students will arrive on July 28, 1999. Veracruz, Mexico — Chair Reta reported she has received a fax from Veracruz and the exchange students were turned down. Chair Reta also reported that she told the students she would try to send them somewhere else. Rudy Delgado reported he is suppose to hear from Monterrey and see if the students can go there instead. (Joe Garcia arrived at 6:45 p.m) Discussion was heard and Gary Hansen moved to give the Veracruz exchange students the choice of going to Spain in 2000 or a possible choice of going to Monterrey this year. Elizabeth Iglesias seconded and the motion carried. (John Marez left at 6:56 p.m. and Minta Moore left at 7:05 p.m.) Ramon Lopez motioned to contact the consulate and make them aware of the situation and what the plans are for next year. Gary Hansen seconded and the motion carried. Fundraiser Committee — Miguel Rendon reported he has had a meeting to identify people who would buy tickets/tables to the "Taste of Sister City— Spain" fundraiser. Mr. Rendon requested he would like the committee to think of an alternative to paella if they are unable to find someone to cater it for them. Mr. Rendon will arrange a meeting with the subcommittee on Tuesday, July 20, 1999 to further discuss the preparation for the fundraiser. Chair Reta asked the Committee if all four of the delegates would still be attending the Sister City Convention in Little Rock. Miguel Rendon reported he probably would not be able to attend the convention. Sue Delaney expressed interest in attending in Mr. Rendon's place. Yalee Shih, Rose Gunji, Elizabeth Iglesias and possibly Sue Delaney will be attending the Conference. Rudy Delgado motioned if only 3 of the 4 delegates go to the Convention that the $2000 allowance be split between the three. Ramon Lopez seconded and the motion carried. Chair Reta informed the Committee that she has sent a letter to the Mayor and City Council inviting them to go a Hagen, Germany. Some of the councilmen have expressed interest in going. ADJOURNMENT — As there was no further business, Chair Reta called for an adjournment. Ramon Lopez moved to adjourn. Joe Garcia seconded and the motion carried.
