ROLL CALL — The roll was called and the recording secretary announced a quorum was present. Chair Reta introduced the new members to the Committee, Sophia Hernandez, Blanca Becerra, Alexander Heatherley and Johnnie Norman. New members gave brief introductions. Chair Reta also introduced John Mathewson from Flour Bluff High School, winner of the Young Artist Competition. Rudy Delgado informed the Committee he has received a thank you letter from Sister Cities International regarding participation in the Young Artist Competition. (Elizabeth Iglesias &Kathryn Barth arrived at 6:09 p.m.) ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR THE 1999-2000 TERM YEAR — Chair Reta called for nominations from the floor for office of General Chairman. Charles Tamez nominated Yalee Shih. Mary Saenz nominated Miguel Rendon. As there were no further nominations heard from the floor, nominations were closed for the office of General Chairman. (Gary Hansen & Toni Lucario arrived at 6:15 p.m) Chair Reta called for nominations from the floor for office of Vice-Chairman for the Yokosuka, Japan subcommittee. Rose Gunji nominated Gary Hansen. As there were no further nominations heard from the floor, nominations were closed for the office of Vice-Chairman for the Yokosuka, Japan subcommittee. Chair Reta called for nominations from the floor for office of Vice-Chairman for the Toledo, Spain subcommittee. Rudy Delgado nominated Elizabeth Iglesias. As there were no further nominations heard from the floor, nominations were closed for the office of Vice-Chairman for the Toledo, Spain subcommittee. Miguel Rendon nominated Blanca Becerra. Rudy Delgado nominated Charles Tamez. As there were no further nominations heard from the floor, nominations were closed for the office of Vice-Chairman for the Veracruz, Mexico subcommittee. Chair Reta called for nominations from the floor for office of Vice-Chairman for the Monterrey, Mexico subcommittee. Ramon Lopez nominated Rudy Delgado. As there were no further nominations heard from the floor, nominations were closed for the office of Vice-Chairman for the Monterrey, Mexico subcommittee. Chair Reta called for nominations from the floor for office of Vice-Chairman for the Agen, France subcommittee. Charles Tamez nominated Toni Lucario. As there were no further nominations heard from the floor, nominations were closed for the office of Vice-Chairman for the Agen, France subcommittee. Chair Reta called for nominations from the floor for office of Vice-Chairman for the Keelung, Taiwan subcommittee. Ramon Lopez nominated Yalee Shih. As there were no further nominations heard from the floor, nominations were closed for the office of Vice- Chairman for the Keelung, Taiwan subcommittee. Chair Reta announced that nominations were closed and requested members use the ballots provided by staff. The results were as follows: General Chairman Miguel Rendon Yokosuka, Japan .Gary Hansen Toledo, Spain Elizabeth Iglesias Veracruz, Mexico .Charles Tamez Monterrey, Mexico Rudy Delgado Agen, France Toni Lucario Keelung, Taiwan Yalee Shih Ms. Loucks explained that the General Vice-Chairman would be elected from among the subcommittee Vice-Chairmen that had just been elected. Ms. Loucks again requested members use the ballot provided by staff. Ms. Loucks tabulated the results for the General Vice- Chairman. General Vice-Chairman Yalee Shih Chair Reta turned over the meeting to newly elected Chair, Miguel Rendon. (Ramon Lopez, Mary Saenz &Rose Gunji left at 6:37 p.m.) H:\PR-DIR\SHARED\CULTURAL\SISTRCTY\MINUTES\99 oct04.doc Sister City Committee Regular Meeting—October 2, 1999 Page 3 of 4 APPROVAL OF MINUTES — Chair Miguel Rendon called for the approval of the regular meeting minutes of July 12, 1999 and special meeting minutes of September 13, 1999. Charles Tamez moved a correction be made to the July 12, 1999 minutes, deleting "a" from "...Council inviting them to go a Hagen, Germany." Elida Gonzalez moved to accept the minutes of July 12, 1999 and September 13, 1999 as corrected. Elizabeth Iglesias seconded and the motion carried. TREASURER'S REPORT — Marion Loucks, staff liaison, gave a brief financial report. Ms. Loucks reported the balance of the Trust Fund is $4,492.50 and the balance of the General Fund account is $18,127.50. COMMITTEE REPORTS— Yokosuka, Japan — Gary Hansen reported he has received a letter from the Mayor inquiring on our safety from Hurricane Bret. Mr. Hansen also reported that the Japanese consul General Masumi Takemoto visited Corpus Christi and hosted a dinner for the Port and Sister City members. Lucy Reta&Drue Combs attended. Agen, France — Charles Tamez reported the exchange students enjoyed themselves and overall their trip went well. Mr. Tamez also reported the exchange students are interested in meeting with the Committee. Veracruz, Mexico—No report Monterrey, Mexico—No report Keelung, Taiwan — Yalee Shih reported she has been notified the Taiwan students were not injured by the earthquake. Lucy Reta informed the Committee an official letter was sent to Keelung inquiring on their safety from the City of Corpus Christi. Toledo, Spain — Elizabeth Iglesias reported she has received a letter of concern regarding ' Hurricane Bret. Ms. Iglesias also reported she has received a fax from Maria Sagrario Diaz Verduguez, inquiring what the requirements were for foreign students to finish their education here in the United States. CURRENT CONCERNS — Rudy Delgado requested the Committee think about the Young Artist Competition 2000 and who would like to chair the project. Mr. Delgado requested it be put on next month's agenda for discussion. Charles Tamez inquired about the status of the Sister City Park. Lucy Reta reported the process has already begun to name the park on IH 37 entrance to the City, Sister City Park. Ms. Reta felt that location was an ideal place because of the visibility it would receive. Johnnie Norman moved to adjourn. Sue Dulaney seconded and the motion carried.
