CALL TO ORDER The March 5, 2001 regular meeting of the Sister City Steering Committee was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Sue Dulaney. II. ROLL CALL— Rosie Alaniz, recording secretary, called roll, announced quorum. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES — Mr. Jesus Rosales pointed out that he was not present at the February meeting and that the minutes should be corrected to reflect that. Ms. Danielle P. Pearrell stated that her name was misspelled. No other changes were made and the minutes were approved as changed. IV. TREASURER'S REPORT— Mr. Ronnie Sepulveda reported the current General Fund balance is $15,993.00 and the Trust Fund is $3,595.88. John Wright secured a $300 donation for the first prize for the Young Artists' Competition and - _. a $20 Honorarium for a speech John Wright made to a local organization. V. DISCUSSION ITEMS — A. Discussion and action on delegates to the Sister Cities International Convention in Atlanta, G.A. — Drue Combs moved to send two representatives to Atlanta at$500 each out of the trust fund. Rose Gunji seconded and motion carried. B. Discussion on 4091 anniversary of the Sister City affiliation with Yokosuka, Japan. — Ms. Drue Combs stated she wants to do something, like an exchange delegation, between the. two countries for the City's 150th anniversary year. She will report back at the April meeting. C. Discussion on Volunteer Exchange Program with Yokosuka, Japan — Sue Dulaney reported that Gary Hansen has not heard back. A motion was made to table this discussion item until the April meeting. Dr. Mufid A. Abudiab seconded and motion carried. VI. COMMITTEE REPORTS Toledo, Spain - Elizabeth Iglesias reported that Melody Cooper will be making an official Sister City trip to Toledo. She also reported that an exhibit with artifacts from Toledo is on display in Memphis, Tennessee and that they she would be going to view this exhibit. SCANNED . � v Veracruz, Mexico — Ms. Rachel Gonzales reported that she received a call from Veracruz thanking her for the letter and that they are interested in knowing names of the students to make plans for them. She thanked Ann Jaime for making the primary contact. Agen, France — Ms. Lucy Reta informed the commission that she and Ms. Pearrell had contacted Mr. Isaac. He asked for a three-week exchange.. They would be working with the students to see if a timeframe is possible. Keelung, Taiwan —Ms. Yalee Shih is waiting on response. Monterrey, Mexico— Ms. Ann Jaime stated that she and Ms. Dulaney made a trip to Monterrey to meet with the Mayor. She said they are willing to participate. Young Artist Competition - Rose Gungi reported the SCI Young Artists' Competition Committee met February 20`h. Rudy Delgado was at the meeting and would continue to help. The deadline is April 19 at the Multicultural Center by 5 p.m. On Friday the artwork will be hung and judged. Viewing on Saturday, April 209h from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and reception on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m at the Multicultural Center where first place $300, second place $200 and third place $100 winners will be announced. Committee Members are encouraged to attend award reception. John Wright secured a first prize sponsor; Dr. JoAnn Canales volunteered to be the $100 sponsor and Ms. Anne Jaime volunteered to be the $200 sponsor. Ms. Gungi asked committee to assist with reception. Rachel Gonzales and Drue Combs will make cookies. Follow-up calls to various schools will be made by March 31, 2001. Ms. Gunji suggested sending a list of the school art teachers and principals to Committee members. Ms. Drue Combs handed out a sheet of instructions on how to access the internet for Sister City websites. VIII. CURRENT CONCERNS - No current concerns. IX. ADJOURNMENT— Meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m. Ronald Sepulveda Multicultural Services Division Park &Recreation Department
