CALL TO ORDER—The April 2, 2001 regular meeting of the Sister City Steering Committee was called to order at 6:07 p.m. by Sue Dulaney. II. ROLL CALL—Ronnie Sepulveda, called roll, announced quorum. II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES — Ms. Rose Gunji made a correction that her name was left off March minutes. She should be shown as present. No other changes were made and the minutes were approved as corrected. III. HEARING FROM THE PUBLIC—None IV. TREASURER'S REPORT — Ronnie Sepulveda reported the current GF balance is $15,993 and the Trust Fund is $3,595.88, the same as last month. V. DISCUSSION ITEMS— A. Discussion on handling of Sister Cities gift items—Ms. Sue Dulaney suggested the Commission keep track of gifts given and to whom. She also suggested rotating gifts given and marking each to show that it is from the Sister City Program. She mentioned it would be a good idea to mark the unmarked gifts we have now. VI. CURRENT CONCERNS - No current concerns. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Agen, France — Danielle P. Pearrell or Lucy Reta — Ms. Pearrell reported that they had last year's Exchange Students meet this year's Exchange Students at a get-acquainted social at the Chamber of Commerce. She further reported that France wants a 3-week exchange. Dates still not firm for this year. B. Keelung, Tiawan — Yalee Shih — She stated that she has not heard anything. C. Monterrey, Mexico — Anne Jaime reported she has been in contact with them and that the Mayor will arrive next Tuesday and will stay through SCANNED Easter. She suggested having a small reception. It was suggested the a reception be on Wednesday, April 11, 2001. She would appreciate knowing who was interested in taking them out to lunch during their stay here. The visiting Mayor will stay with Sue Dulaney Tuesday through Thursday and with Melody Cooper Friday and Saturday. Extra activities suggested were the Civitan Club meeting with Rachel Gonzales and presentation to the City Council meeting if they get here in time. (Lucy Reta arrived at 6:20 p.m.) D. Toledo, Spain — Elizabeth Iglesias or Dr. Jesus Rosales — Ms. Iglesias reported that a 4-week exchange has been agreed to. Firm dates needed. E. Veracruz, Mexico— Rachel Gonzales or Raquel Madrigal — Ms. Gonzales reported she received a letter with information about their two students, one is a 19 year old girl and the other is a 17 year old student. Suggested dates are July 5 through 21. In the future Veracruz would like to send between 5 to 10 exchange students. The letter expressed their joy with the exchange program. Ms. Gonzales will be working to get their e-mail addresses to make correspondence easier. F. Yokosuka, Japan — Gary Hansen reported the proposed dates for our students to go to Japan are July 17-30, 2001 and for their students to visit us from July 30 to August 13, 2001. Mr. Hansen suggested that the VIP Program take place in the fall when flight costs are less costly, around $300 to $400 instead of $800. Drue Combs moved that the Commission participate in the VIP program. Gary Hanson seconded and the motion carried. Mr. Hanson suggested when we are ready to select someone, we select someone involved with the Sister City Program. G. Young Artists' Competition — Rose Gunji reported she is waiting on the various schools to respond. She asked those with schools if they had heard anything and suggested they stop by and talk to the school's Principal and art teachers. The Reception will be Sunday, April 22 at 2 p.m. H. 40th Anniversary with Yokosuka and City's 150th Anniversary — Drue Combs reported that the City is not interested in talking about the event until after the Election. Ideas for the event include Fireworks and a Symphony performance. It was noted that there are people who will donate to that kind of an event. (Rachel Gonzales left at 6:50 p.m.) Student Exchange Program — Drue Combs passed around the Sister City brochure. She stated that the Selection Process for the Student Exchange program is officially completed. It was suggested that performing artists, coming to the City for some other reason, could be used as a fundraising opportunity for the Sister City Programs. Their costs would be less because someone else is paying for transportation. (Rose Gunji left at 7:07 p.m.) VIII. STAFF REPORT-None IX. CURRENT CONCERNS - None X.
