CALL TO ORDER - The regular meeting of the Sister City Steering Committee was called to order at 6:25 p.m. by Chair, Sue Dulaney. II. ROLL CALL - Recording Secretary, K Chute called roll, announced quorum. III. APPROVAUCORRECTION OF MINUTES from January 7, 2002 meeting - The minutes wereapprovedas written. IV. TREASURER'S REPORT- Ronnie Sepulveda was absent. There was no report. V. HEARING FROM THE PUBLIC - none • VI. DISCUSSION ITEMS - A. Trip to Corpus Christi for our Sister Cities Sue Dulaney requested Wayne Bennett coordinate this project. He will report to our next meeting. B. Trip to Japan for our local people Drue Combs gave a report on the plans and itinery being developed for the October 1 through 13, 2002 trip from Corpus Christi to Yokosuka, Japan. The goal is to get 40 local people to go on the trip. Yokosuka's Mayor and 24 other people will be here on October 25-28, 2002. Ms. Combs suggested we need to plan a banquet and other activities while they are here: C. Sister City.Flag Project John Wright reported that a pre-meeting demonstration suggested the flags be hung straight-out on the wooden baseboard of the second floor railing of City Hall. Our proposal will be reviewed by the architect, Jim Boggs. It was suggested they be hung the Tuesday before Flag Day, June 14th so the City Council can participate. VII. COMMITTEE REPORTS ;- A. A. Agen, France - Danielle Pearrell reported correspondence has been received. B. Keelung, Taiwan - Yalee Shih expressed her appreciation for the committee's support for the Youth Sports Group during their recent visit. C. Monterrey, Mexico - John Wright, Ann Jaime, Wayne Bennett, Chris Kailas and Ronnie Sepulveda attended a meeting to present 150 Fire Department Uniforms to • - - the Monterrey Representatives. These will outfit their 120-member crew. . SCPNNED D. Toledo, Spain — Jesus Rosales reported correspondence continues. They are requesting consideration of an artist visiting Corpus Christi to present an exhibit. E. Veracruz, Mexico — Mannti Cummins said correspondence has been sent. F. Yokosuka, Japan — 1. Firefighter's Bunker Gear - Gary Hansen said the one set of the has been donated/sent. It will be used in a display. 2. VIP Exchange - JoAnn Canales, Danielle Pearrell, and Gary Hansen met on 22nd to set the project schedule. Information was mailed January 25th to Volunteer Center, the Caller Times, and sponsoring organizations. The Volunteer Center sent the news release to all the Non-Profit organizations via fax. Applications are due by February 8th. Interviews will be held on Tuesday, February 12th at the Galvan House beginning at 5 p.m. The winning intern will be announcement February 15th Tentative dates are March 15th for the Japanese representative's visit and April 1st for our visit to Japan. Trip funding was discussed. Activity suggestions and volunteers were requested for their visit. 3. 40th Anniversary with Yokosuka and the City's 150 Anniversary — Drue Combs presented her report earlier. (See VI.B.) G. 2002 Young Artist Competition — Rose Gunji was absent. Sue Dulaney asked all Committee members to remind their contacts of the upcoming deadline. H. Student Exchange Program — JoAnn Canales was absent but has requested volunteers for the Student Interviews scheduled for the evenings of February 19th and 20th at the Galvan House. I. Student Exchange Activities Report — Judy Beckendorfer was absent. Edna will meet with Judy Beckendorfer, Sue Dulaney and Chris Kailas to discuss activities. J. Artist Exchange — Melody Cooper is requesting email and other address information of Toledo Art Museums to coordinate the project. VIII. STAFF REPORT — Ronnie Sepulveda was absent. Chris Kailas stated the letters and press releases were mailed on January 24th to introducing this year's Sister City Committee Chairpersons of each Sister City to. the various representatives of all our Sister Cities. Chairpersons were encouraged to contact their counterparts to establish firm dates for the student exchange visits. IX. CURRENT CONCERNS — Melody Cooper confirmed that the Mayor would not be making travel plans until after the election. X. ADJOURNMENT — John Wright made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 7:12 p.m. Yalee Shih seconded. Motion passed. /% , • 's Kailas Multicultural Services Division Park & Recreation Department
