CALL TO ORDER: The regular meeting of the Sister City Steering Committee was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by Chair, Sue Dulaney. Ms. Dulaney asked the Sister City Steering Committee members to introduce themselves to the new members. II. ROLL CALL: Recording Secretary, Lydia J. Leos called roll, Sue Dulaney announced quorum. M. APPROVAL OF MINUTES from September 9th, 2002 meeting: Yalee Shih made the motion that the minutes be approved with the corrections. Edna Balboa seconded the motion. Motion carried. (Mufid Abudiab arrived at 6:07 p.m.) (Gary Hansen arrived at 6:30 p.m.) IV. TREASURER'S REPORT: Chris Kailas reported $2,035.09 was in the Trust Fund Account and $15,961 was in the General Fund. V. DISCUSSION ITEMS: Drue Combs gave a detailed report regarding the Japan Festival in Corpus Christi. She said that she would be faxing Press Releases for the event that would take place at the Texas State Museum of Asian Culture. Some of the activities included floral arrangements, calligraphy, Japanese dancing, cooking of Asian food and special activities for the children. The Japanese Delegation is to arrive in Corpus Christi on October 24th at around 4 p.m. A"Red Carpet"reception welcoming our guests will be held at the new airport. Friday, October 25th was designated as "See Corpus Christi Day" for the Japanese Delegation. They will begin the day with a visit to the BEB on Port, then visit the Lexington Museum, and City Hall for presentation of gifts and Honorary Citizenship Certificates. The Mayor, several City leaders and some Naval Officers will host a luncheon for the delegation at the Museum of Science and History. Friday evening, a sit-down dinner will be held for the Japanese Delegation at the home of Sue Dulaney. On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,the Japanese Delegation will be presenting their cultural demonstrations at the Texas State Museum of Asian Culture. On Saturday evening,the Japanese Delegation will be attending the "Sweet SCANNED Adeline"concert in Flour Bluff. The Japanese will then depart from Corpus Christi on Sunday, October 27, 2002. The nomination and election of 2003 Chair. The Bylaws state that the chairperson is only allowed to,server a 2-year term. Yalee Shih moved to amend the bylaws to allow for an extended term for the Chairperson. Rose Gunji seconded the motion. Drue Combs moved to table both the bylaw change and the selection of the chair until the November meeting. Gary Hansen seconded the motion. Motion carried. Sue Dulaney presented a video on"Wheelchair for Peace Sister City International Program" that she acquired when she, Rose Gunji and Ronnie Sepulveda attended the International Convention in Toledo, Ohio. Ms.Dulaney did express and interest in this program for our Sister City and explained how donations could be acquired through matching funds. COMMITTEE REPORTS: A. Agen,France—No report. B. Keelung, Taiwan — Yalee Shih reported that and invitation has been received to attend the "Memory Day of the Chinese Father of the Country". This event is scheduled for the second week in November. Please speak to Yalee Shih if anyone is interested and needs more information. C. Monterrey,Mexico—Ann Jaime was absent. There was no report. D. Veracruz,Mexico—Raquel Madrigal was absent. There was no report. E. Toledo,Spain—Jesus Rosales was absent. Sue Dulaney announced that and invitation had been extended to go to Toledo Spain. Toledo, Ohio is taking a contingency for"Corpus Christi Day". Ms. Dulaney will get more details regarding this invitation for those who might be interested in attending. F. Yokosuka, Japan — Drue Combs informed the committee that the Japanese would like our delegation to attend the "150th Anniversary Celebration of Commodore Perry"August, 2003. G. Sister City Travel Coordinator—There was no report. H. 40th Anniversary with Yokosuka and City's 150th Anniversary — Drue Combs gave a historical report regarding the 150th Anniversary Celebration of Commodore Perry. Commodore Perry opened trade with Japan back in 1852. Ms. Combs also informed the committee that since our Mayor was not able to go to Yokosuka, Japan this year, that plans for our Mayor and delegation to attend the Commodore Perry Celebration next year would be a reciprocal visit. The tentative scheduled trip to Japan will be in August of 2003. I. Activities Report- There was no report. J. Art Exchange Program — Rose Gungi sent letters concerning the Sister City International Young Artists' Competition to all the Principals and art teachers. Ms. Gunji asked for donations totaling $600 to be used for the awards ($300 for 1st place; $200 for 2nd place and $100 for 3rd place)for our local art contest. Ms. Gunji spoke with John Wright regarding the poster design and he has agreed to work on that. The competition will be held in March. Ms. Gunji asked committee members for help with the reception. Invitations will be sent to all Principals, teachers and students that participated in the Sister City International Young Artists' Competition. Sue Dulaney stated that these committees would be appointed at the next meeting. K. Public Relations—There was no report. 5- VI. STAFF REPORTS: Chris Kallas reported that the new roster was available. The roster contained the names of the new committee members. Ms. Kallas asked the new members to review the list make sure that the information was correct and please include their e-mail addresses. VII. CURRENT CONCERNS: • The Sister City Committee will discuss working on the Wheelchair for Peace Program. • The Sister City Peace Pole's installation is scheduled for sometime in November. VIII. ADJOURNMENT: Since there were no other matters to discuss, Randy Farrar made the motion to adjourn the meeting. Yalee Shih seconded the motion and the motion carried.
