SENIOR COI UNITY SERVICES ADVISORY COMMIITEB
MEETING HELD APRIL 7, 1994
The April 7, 1994 meeting of the Senior Community Services Advisory
Committee was called to order by Elsa Ciminelli, Chairperson.
MEMBERS PRESENT: E. Alba, E. Ciminelli, A. Creighton, J. Dunn, H.
Fennessy, G. Garza, E. Gonzalez, M. Hays, E. Oliver, A. Poldrack, M.
Reser and A. Ruiz.
Ex-OFFICIO M811BERS PRESENT: 0. Flores, H. Pouts, E. Gonzalez, M.
Medina, J.F. Walker, and 0. Williams.
APPROVAL OF MIHVTES: It was moved by 0. Flores and seconded by E. Alba
that the minutes for March 3, 1994 be approved as submitted. The motion
was unanimously approved.
ATTENDANCE ROSTER: It was moved by 0. Flores and seconded by A.
Creighton that the absence of A. Ruiz for the month of March be excused
due to illness. The motion was unanimously approved.
STAFF REPORT:
A. ZAVALA SENIOR CENTER UPDATE: Ms. Gonzalez reported that the ground
breaking ceremony was quite successful. She stated that everyone did a
good job and thanked all who provided assistance. Ms. Munoz reported
that a pre-construction meeting will be held on April 8, 1994. They are
hoping to start construction at Zavala on Monday, April 11, 1994.
Ms. Munoz went on to say that the Williams Senior Center is about 10%
into construction.
B. 1994 CDBG UPDATE: Me. Munoz reported that the Planning Commission
met on Wednesday, April 6, 1994 and have taken staff's recommendations
on the CDBG priority lists that were submitted. The two items being
considered are: Northwest Senior Center and the Security lighting for
the centers. A public hearing on the CDBG request will be held May 3rd
or May 10th by City Council. We will notify the Committee in advance as
soon as we have the correct date. Discussion followed.
C. ENP BUDGET AMENDMENT UPDATE: Ma. Munoz reported that the budget
amendment approved at last months meeting had been augmented. The
amendment was reviewed by the Committee and all changes were outlined.
Discussion followed, all questions were answered satisfactory. The
amendment was approved.
REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION AMTMORIYT:
Mr. Benavides provided a brief update regarding RTA projects. He
stressed that they are continuing their efforts to making regular
services accessible to disabled people. RTA is also working on a
proposed training program that will involve working closer with Senior

Community Services center staff. He discussed a travel training program
designed to help the traveler access regular bus services. Mr.
Benavides is hoping that the program will open new doors of opportunity
and choices. They also hope to reduce the fear that people have about
riding regular services. The program will include video and audio
cassettes which will be available to the public. RTA is also hoping to
mass market the program to the community by working with HEB stores.
Discussion followed.
EX-OFFICIO REPORTS: A brief activity report was given by each of the
ex-officios from the centers.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
None at this time.
NES BUSINESS:
A. APRIL MENUS: It was moved by A. Ruiz and seconded by E. Alba to
approve the April menus as amended. Discussion followed. The motion
passed unanimously.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Ms. Munoz informed the Committee that the new van is
finally in. She went on to report that the department is in the process
of developing the '95 City Budget.
The board luncheon will be held at the Lindale Senior Center, April 21,
1994 at 11:15 a.m.. Try to make an effort to call in and RSVP for the
luncheon.
Older Americans Month Kickoff will be Friday, April 29, 1994 from 1:00
p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Moravian Hall.
The Silver Haired Legislature Elections Press Conference will be held on
April 11, 1994 at the City Council Chambers from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00
p.m. .
