MINUTES
SENIOR COMMUNITY SERVICES ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MEETING HELD OCTOBER 7, 1993
The October 7, 1993 meeting of Senior Community Services Advisory
Committee was called to order by Elsa Ciminelli, Chairperson.
MEMBERS PRESENT: E. Abrams, E. Alba, E. Ciminelli, D. Colin, A.
Creighton, J. Dunn, H. Fennessy, R. Garcia, G. Garza, E. Gonzalez, K.
Gonzalez, M. Hays, M. Jones, J.V. McDonald, E. Oliver, and A. Ruiz.
E%—OFFICIO MEMBERS PRESENT: R. Cisneros, 0. Flores, E. Gonzalez, H.
Fouts, M. Medina, J.F. Walker, & 0. Williams.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: It was moved by 0. Flores and seconded by R.
Cisneros that the minutes for September 2, 1993 be approved as
submitted with the correction to page 2, 2nd paragraph, should read
"naming a building after someone who is still alive". The motion was
unanimously approved.
ATTENDANCE ROSTER: It was moved by J. Dunn and seconded by 0. Flores
that we excuse E. Abrams absence for the month of September due to
illness. Motion was unanimously approved.
A. EXCUSED ABSENCE POLICY: It was moved by R. Cisneros and seconded by
D. Colin that we table this item until the policy is revised. Motion
was unanimously approved.
WASHINGTON SENIOR CENTER UPDATE: Council Member Betty Jean Longoria
gave a brief update on the Northside Senior Center. The recommendation
on the contractor will go before Council on the 19th. Hope to start
construction the end of November or beginning of December. Discussion
followed.
Mr. Angel Escobar from Engineering took over at this time. He informed
the Committee that they are about a month behind on schedule due to the
evaluation of bids. The Zavala Senior Center is also about a month
behind on schedule. They expect to receive bids on the 17th of November
and take to Council on the 20th. Hope to start construction on the
January 10, 1994. Discussion followed.
At this time Ms. Martinez informed the Committee on the steps to be
taken for naming a facility as included in the packet. Discussion
followed. A committee was made up of J. Dunn, E. Alba, A. Ruiz, and E.
Oliver to handle the naming of the new facilities.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
A. FACS UPDATE: Ms. Martinez reported that she is still working on the
financial report. It was moved by 0. Flores and seconded by 0. Williams
to table this item until the report has been presented to the FACS
Committee. SCANNED

E. Ciminelli passed around a letter of appreciation to be signed by the
Committee to present to Malcolm Matthews for the dedication and support
from the Senior Community Services Staff at the BBQ. Discussion
followed. It was moved by M. Medina and seconded by R. Cisneros to
present SCS staff with a plaque or certificate of appreciation. It was
then moved by Dr. Creighton and seconded by 0. Flores that it be a
plaque to present the staff at the Christmas Dinner. K. Gonzalez will
be in charge of getting prices on a plaque.
ELDERLY NUTRITION PROGRAM UPDATE: Item was tabled until next month.
SENIOR EMPLOYMENT PROJECT UPDATE: M. Reue gave a brief update on the
program.
E%—OFFICIO REPORTS: Each member reported on the projects held at their
center.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS: The Rental Policy will be included in the November
packet.
NEW BUSINESS:
A. ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES CONTRACT: Ms. Martinez gave a brief
summary of this contract. The contract is funded for 10 meals and it
will be a independent of the Texas Department of Human Services. These
meals will be short term meals.
B. ELDERLY NUTRITION PROGRAM RENEWAL APPLICATION: Ms. Martinez went
over some of the highlighted items on this contract. She asked the
Committee to take the contract home with them and it they had any
questions to please call her at the office. It was moved by E. Abrams
and seconded by D. Colin that we accept the proposal on the budget as
submitted. The motion was unanimously approved.
C. OCTOBER MENUS: It was moved by E. Alba and seconded by H. Fennessy
to approve the October menus as submitted. The motion was unanimously
approved.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: The board luncheon will be held at Zavala on October 21,
1993 at 11:15 a.m. .
Ms. Colin announced to the Committee that a seminar was being held on
December 7, 1993 by Premiere Health. Ms. Munoz announced the schedule
of the flu shots.
ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business, the meeting was
adjourned.
