HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Marina Advisory Committee - 11/11/2019 - SpecialMarina Advisory Committee 11/12/19 MINUTES Special Meeting Marina Advisory Committee Monday, November 11, 2019 Members Present: William McDowell, Donnell Laux, Martha Avery, Ron Smith, Gerry Morrow, Robyn Cobb Members Absent: Richard Bell, Mona Baen Staff Present: Gina Sanchez, Marina Superintendent; Leah Hughen, Management Aide Call to Order: Chairman McDowell called the special meeting of the Marina Advisory Committee to order at 5:30 p.m. Action on Minutes: The motion was made by Ms. Avery and seconded by Mr. Laux to approve the minutes of the 10/07/19 regular meeting; the motion passed unanimously. Presentations and/or Public Comment: none Discussion Items and Possible Action Thereto: Depth along bulkhead near J-hoist: Ms. Sanchez advised she is researching different areas on the L-head to relocate the J-hoist due to the depth at the bulkhead being too shallow and not having the funding to dredge. Ms. Sanchez shared the Engineering Department cost break down for the McGee Beach Nourishment dredging. The dredging project that will include a small portion of the South Basin within the Marina will cost $3,000,000.00. Ms. Sanchez provided statistics from Marina Dock Age magazine showing the frequency in which the marinas polled dredge. Thirteen percent of facilities dredge every 5 years, which is the goal Ms. Sanchez would like to establish funding for. Marina Rescue Vessel and Enforcement: Ms. Sanchez advised most marinas don’t have a search and rescue operation. The Marina has a memo of understanding with the Fire Department to assist them by using the Marina vessel to transport personnel to an emergency call. Ms. Sanchez advised the goal is to provide slip space for a towing service so they can offer services to Marina tenants. Committee/Staff Reports: CC Marina Foundation: Mr. Laux advised the formation of the foundation must start from scratch. Ms. Sanchez spoke with Coastal Bend Community Foundation and received information that a minimum deposit of $10,000.00 is required to start a fund. Ms. Avery believes there was a miscommunication and offered to be at the meeting with Ms. Sanchez and the president of the Coastal Bend Community Foundation. Culture: Mr. Laux explained the status of the foundation determines the events the culture committee will be able to organize. Environmental and Education: Ms. Cobb and Mr. Smith are in the process of gathering information on marine life and marine vessels for signage. Julie Galbraith, a former interpretive signage expert with the Texas State Aquarium, will assist the committee. Landscaping: Ms. Avery advised landscaping will be on hold until the weather improves in spring. Ms. Sanchez shared Texas A & M University Corpus Christi is hosting The Big Event, a community service event. In April students will spend a day in the Marina performing a variety of tasks. Director’s Report: Ms. Sanchez reported Lynn Traber completed her DockWalker training and will soon begin training others. Mr. Laux recruited members from his USCG Auxiliary flotilla for the program. The demolition of K pier is in the bidding process and will be taken back to the Type A board afterwards. Marina staff continues work on Morf pier, electrical, water, and decking remain. A donation has been made for a memorial bench for Hal Suter, Ms. Sanchez would like to include his family in the design process. The Marina is hosting a vessel registration event with Texas Parks and Wildlife on November 15th and 16th. Marina Advisory Committee 11/12/19 Mr. McDowell and Ms. Baen will term out in December, positions for an engineer, environmentalist, and at large will be open.
