HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Marina Advisory Committee - 10/07/2019Marina Advisory Committee 10/14/19 MINUTES Regular Meeting Marina Advisory Committee Monday, October 7, 2019 Members Present: William McDowell, Donnell Laux, Mona Baen, Richard Bell, Martha Avery, Ron Smith, Gerry Morrow Members Absent: Robyn Cobb Staff Present: Rene Garza, Marina Dock Master; Leah Hughen, Management Aide Call to Order: Chairman McDowell called the regular meeting of the Marina Advisory Committee to order at 5:31 p.m. Action on Minutes: The motion was made by Ms. Avery and seconded by Mr. Laux to approve the minutes of the 9/09/19 special meeting; the motion passed unanimously. Presentations and/or Public Comment: none Discussion Items and Possible Action Thereto: Marina Rescue Vessel and Enforcement: Mr. Garza advised of a recent jet ski collision that the Marina and Parks and Wildlife Department responded to. The topic will be tabled until Fire Chief Rocha can attend. Mr. Bell suggested Parks and Wildlife also attend. Dockwalker Program: Lynn Traber gave an update on the progress of the Dockwalker Program. Ms. Traber has concluded her training and is ready to begin training others to become Dockwalkers. Five members from Ms. Traber’s USCG Auxiliary flotilla have volunteered and she expects to have at least a dozen Dockwalkers trained by February 2020. Ms. Traber received all Dockwalker program material from California and has begun to adjust the material toward Texas boaters. The next step is finding a printer for the adjusted materials. Mr. Garza offered to look into a company the Marina has used before. Depth along bulkhead near J-hoist: Mr. Garza advised due to the construction of the bulkhead, dredging too deep will compromise the structure. Mr. Bell and Ms. Avery expressed concern that there has never been an annual dredge plan in place and the need for swift answers due to the regattas scheduled for next year. Mr. Garza advised the City Engineering Department could possibly answer more of the committee’s questions. Mr. Bell requested a representative from the Engineering Department come to the next committee meeting. La Nina Update: Mr. Garza advised Mike Firestone is set to survey La Nina this month to determine if the vessel can make it across the bay. Mr. Bell inquired what will happen if the vessel is not fit to withstand a trip across the bay. Mr. Garza advised if the vessel is not deemed seaworthy the City Manager will determine the next course of action. Committee/Staff Reports: Boater Facility: Mr. Bell is awaiting the survey currently being vetted by the City. Facility Design: Mr. Bell advised the students from Texas A & M Kingsville are putting a design together for the haul out facility. Project funding will come through a bond or from the seawall fund . Mr. Garza advised the students are drawing up preliminary plans that the Marina will be able to take to City Engineering in the future. Mr. Bell requested a presentation from the TAMUK students once their project is completed. CC Marina Foundation: Mr. Laux advised the formation of the foundation is tied up with the Legal Department. Any event the Culture committee would organize to fundraise is on hold until the foundation is formed. Ms. Avery brought up a suggestion from a previous meeting to contact the Coastal Bend Community Foundation in order to expedite the ability to accept donations. Mr. Garza requested Ms. Avery contact Ms. Sanchez with the CCCF information. Marina Advisory Committee 10/14/19 Director’s Report: Mr. Bell advised that the Type A Board approved funding for the demolition of K pier up to $50,000.00. Mr. Garza reported the bids that have come in exceed the original estimate by $50,000.00. Mr. Bell advised the Marina will go back to the Type A Board with the new amount. Mr. Garza does not anticipate any problem having the new amount approved by the Type A Board. Mr. Garza reported the tenant potluck was a success and another is planned for mid- January. Marina staff took part in oil spill training. Morf pier assembly is coming along, the next step is the electrical design to be done by a master electrician with the City and installed in house.
