Regular Meeting
Marina Advisory Committee
Monday, February 3, 2020
Members Present: Donnell Laux, Ron Smith, Robyn Cobb, Rick Bell, Clifford Bost, Charles Pendlyshok
Members Absent: Martha Avery, Margareta Fratila
Staff Present: Gina Sanchez, Marina Superintendent; Leah Hughen, Management Aide
Call to Order: Chairman Laux called the regular meeting of the Marina Advisory Committee to order at
5:30 p.m.
Action on Minutes: The motion was made by Mr. Bell and seconded by Ms. Cobb to approve the minutes
of the 12/02/19 regular meeting; the motion passed unanimously.
Presentations and/or Public Comment: Allen Borden, Tony Hauglum, Joe Frazer expressed their
concern over the City’s contractor insurance requirements. They believe there should be different
requirements for the scope of work being done. Mr. Hauglum and Mr. Frazer advised smaller businesses
that conduct minor boat cleaning are unable to afford the insurance premiums, so boats are becoming an
eyesore and detracting from the beauty of the Marina. Mr. Hauglum also pointed out that when someone
is working onboard his vessel his watercraft liability insurance should cover that person.
Discussion Items and Possible Action Thereto: Welcome New Committee Members: Mr. Laux
welcomed new committee members Clifford Bost and Charles Pendylshok. Elect New Vice Chairman:
Mr. Laux called for a nomination or volunteer for Vice Chairman. Mr. Laux asked Mr. Pendylshok to
serve and he agreed. Ms. Cobb made a motion for Mr. Pendylshok to become Vice Chairman and Mr.
Bell seconded; the motion passed unanimously. Vehicle Break Ins: Corpus Christi Police Department
Senior Officer Javier Cantu advised vehicle break ins are on the rise city wide. Officer Cantu suggested
not leaving valuables in plain sight and double checking that you’ve locked your doors. Set Retreat Date:
The committee agreed on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. for the retreat. The location is to be
determined.
Committee/Staff Reports: Environmental and Education: Ms. Cobb advised a proposal for educational
signs will be go before Coastal Bays and Estuaries this week for funding. Foundation: Mr. Laux and Ms.
Sanchez met with the Coastal Bend Community Foundation and learned they always require a balance of
$10,000.00 to remain in an account. Since this is not a feasible option Mr. Laux is looking into Fiscal
Sponsors. Boaters Facility: Mr. Bell and Ms. Sanchez have set up a meeting to discuss the survey the City
is vetting before sending out to tenants for their input on what they would like to see in the new facility as
well as other tenant issues.
Director’s Report: Ms. Sanchez shared K pier was successfully demolished with Type A Board funds.
Unable to find new ownership for La Nina, the vessel was demolished. Ms. Sanchez advised M pier is
awaiting electrical plans from Engineering before the install can begin. Once electrical, water, and decking
are installed there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony. Completion is estimated for May 2020. USCG
Auxiliary to replace old and damaged boater information sign near boat ramp.
Identify Items to be placed on Next Agenda: Risk Management Representative to discuss contractor
insurance requirements, Conrad Bulcher Weather Station, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
Representative to discuss enforcement of boating violations
