Library Board Minutes
March 3, 2020
Members Present: Alice Nixon, Candy Hart, Nicole Carroll, Vickie Natale, and Julie Rogers
Members Absent: Ida Hobbs and Roberta Sewell
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, and Sylvia Sanchez, Secretary
Call to Order: Alice Nixon called the meeting to order at 10:33 a.m.
Approval of Minutes
A motion to approve the minutes as presented was made by Nicole Carroll and seconded by Vickie Natale. Motion passed
unanimously.
Friends and Director’s Report
Laura Garcia distributed the Spring 2020 Discover Brochure and reported on the upcoming library programs.
The Friends will fund 15 scholarships for the COHS Program. The next Success for Life graduation will be November 7.
Preparation for the Summer Reading (SR) programs have started. The Friends have allocated $10,000 for Summer Reading
for children, teens and will now include adults.
Mrs. Garcia reported that HiSet Preparation classes are being offered on the first floor. This area will also be used for
Makerspace classes and she reported that the first basic sewing classes, which was offered on February 21, had good
attendance.
The Library Foundation will cover the cost for two years for the Career Online High School (C0HS) platform, HiSet
Instructors, and the Teen Bookfest by the Bay event, at a cost of $45,000 for the two-year period
The wireless access points, which are part of the CDBG Broadband grant, need controller equipment installed to complete
the project.
Staff is still working through the E-Rate process.
Vickie Natale spoke about the 100th anniversary of the Women's Suffrage Movement and events that will be hosted by the
League of Women Voters (LWV) and other partners. The LWV partnered with the Library to create a historical exhibit to
celebrate the anniversary. The exhibit will be at the Nueces County Courthouse through March afterwards it will be at La
Retama Central Library followed by other library locations.
Old Business
Members discussed the Library Survey trial period and timeframe. The preference is to open the survey for three weeks
during the first part of April.
New Business
A motion was made by Vickie Natale and seconded by Nicole Carroll to excuse Julie Rogers from last month’s meeting and
Ida Hobbs and Roberta Sewell from todays. Motion passed unanimously.
