HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Arts And Cultural Commission - 11/10/2020ÐÏࡱquire an RFP to be created and put out for a professional art handling team to deinstall, crate, transport, and reinstall the work if another site was chosen outside ABC grounds.
City staff and commission members will work on finding other possible locations for the sculpture.
Becky Perrin, Parks and Recreation assistant director explained the emergency agenda
item to the commission. She received a message from the City Managers office that the Jesus Moroles sculpture located in the atrium of City Hall was to be relocated to the Art Museum
in three days. The commission explained to Mrs. Perrin that this was a highly unusual direction from city authority and that it simply was not possible either logistically (safely) or
by ordience, as art from the public art collection cannot be donated unless it was approved by the ACC. If the piece needed to be moved as soon as possible, professional art handlers
would be needed to deinstall and crate it, and it would have to be stored in a secure climate-controlled location. Commissioner Carolyn Mauck said she would contact Ken Rosier, Del Mar
College Art Department chair to see if he would consider accepting the piece and installing it on campus. Commissioner Sharon Sedwick said she would contact the City Mangers office to
discuss the options. All members agreed.
Mr. Perrin reported top the group that the city had not had any more dissent about the Coppini fountain and that pursing the ACC statement
approval was a moot point for the ACC at this time. No discussion transpired.
Votes for the Star Award artist were tallied prior to todays meeting. Artist Clarissa Gonzalez was chosen
as the winner. Commissioner Laura Petican will work with Clarissa and offer her the commission of 20 pieces at $40 per piece. Ms. Petican suggested the Star Award nomination requests
go out mid-December to non-profit cultural organizations and be awarded in March. The group agreed on the timeline.
Staff liaison Shelly Rios told the commission that an RFP had gone
out to a tile person to repair the Selena Memorial. Work will begin after the procurement process was complete in the next few weeks.
