PUBLIC COMMENT – None
The Commission meets this day to discuss the public statement Dr. Petican wrote for the municipal
art of public dissent. The statement is as follows:
The City of Corpus Christi Arts & Cultural Commission (ACC) remains dedicated to providing
guidance and advice on the Public Art Program, the Public Art Collection, and the Arts Grants.
Its mission is centered in the advancement of an inclusive cultural repository that represents
the diverse communities of the Coastal Bend, from both historical and contemporary
perspectives. It is committed to fostering continued understanding of the evolving significance
and meanings of the works in its custodianship on matters of iconography and patronage, and
asserts a mandate of inclusivity, respect, and sensitivity in upholding its responsibilities to the
citizens of Corpus Christi whom it serves.
On the matter of recent public dissent concerning works in the Public Art Collection, the ACC
will honor these responsibilities through ongoing dialogue and recommendations pertaining to
the works on a case-by-case basis. It will welcome conversation and encourage education on
the Collection through various initiatives including, but not limited to, the recontextualization
and/or re-presentation of its holdings through informational signage accompanying their
display, possible relocation, and accessioning/de-accessioning processes. In the case of
Pompeo Coppini’s Queen of the Sea of 1914-1918, and recent discussion related to its
patronage by Daughters of the Confederacy and the Rotary Club of Corpus Christi, the ACC
recommends a measure of re-contextualization by way of an informational plaque installed
alongside the sculpture. This plaque will acknowledge a more comprehensive history for the
work and will articulate its evolving meaning with respect to its contemporary social
implications. With this motion, the ACC hopes to honor its standing as an inclusive and
responsible civic entity which celebrates the multitude of histories and sensibilities represented
within the Public Art Collection.
Dr. Abu suggested that that the statement should be divided into two; one to address the overarching
sentiment of the ACC and another separate statement that offers a solution to the dissent of the
Coppini piece. Dr. Petican argued that the ACC was tasked with addressing both issues, and that the
2
swift turnaround required of the Commission would not warrant enough time for two statements. The
ACC voted 8-1 in favor of accepting the statement as is. Shelly will submit this statement to the City
Manager through Parks and Recreation Leadership.
The group requested that the statement, once accepted, should be posted on social media and the
Arts & Cultural page of the Parks and Recreation website.
Nick Gignac moved to adjourn the meeting. Laura seconded. Meeting adjourned 4:41 pm
.
