Members Present: Alice Nixon, Vickie Natale, Candy Hart, Julie Rogers, Nicole Carroll, Sharon Hines,
Dora Wilburn, Veronica Towns, Ida Hobbs
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director; Stephanie Jimenez
Call to Order: Alice Nixon called the meeting to order at 10:35 AM.
Introduction of New Board Members: Sharon Hines, Dora Wilburn, and Veronica Towns introduced
themselves to the rest of the Library Board.
Approval of Minutes: A motion to approve the February minutes was made by Candy Hart and
seconded by Nicole Carroll. Motion passed unanimously.
Friends of the Library Report: Laura Garcia reported that the Friends are doing a program to be
presented in memory of past members. The Friends are sponsoring a monthly virtual book club titled
Murder at the Library. At the end of each month, there will be a virtual program featuring the author of
the book for that month.
Director's Report: Mrs. Garcia reported that the library buildings had no major problems during the
freeze February 14 – 18, 2021. Harte and Garcia were without power for several days. La Retama
Central was a warming station. All libraries returned to their regular hours on February 19.
La Retama Central Library is getting new flooring throughout the first floor. Wood-like tile is being put
down in place of carpet. The roof on the building is progressing and should be finished soon. The Local
History Room has been renovated with new furniture and a new layout.
Hopkins Library needs a new fire suppression system. The library will be closed for about a month to
install the new equipment.
Mrs. Garcia hopes to take the bid for the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system to City Council in
April.
Library staff has been called to help in the City's Call Center for COVID vaccination information and to
distribute water to those areas whose water was affected after the freeze.
Old Business: The Board's proclamation for National Library Week as presented by Julie Rogers was
approved by the Board. Vickie Natale moved that the dates be changed from April 10-25 to the correct
dates, April 4-10, 2021. Candy Hart seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Several members
of the Board will make sure that the proclamation is received by the Mayor's Office in a timely manner.
New Business: The April meeting will be both in-person and virtual. Stephanie Jiminez will have
equipment set up in La Retama Room at La Retama Central Library for those who want to participate in
person. Those attending virtual will continue to use the Webex platform.
