HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Human Relations Commission - 12/07/2006 Corpus Christi Human Relations Commission Summary Minutes for December 7, 2006 Commission that this Commission's Fair Housing Subcommittee would like to partner with the Committee for Persons with Disabilities to conduct a study and review of the City's Housing Programs that will assist people with obtaining fair, affordable and accessible housing. MOTION: Linda Fallwell-Stover moved to allow the Corpus Christi Human Relation's Fair Housing Subcommittee to conduct a study and review the City's Housing Programs with a second by Errol Summerlin. The motion passed. B. Committee for Persons with Disabilities (CFPWD)—Linda Fallwell-Stover • David Ramos, Center for Independent Living presented the CFPWD an update on the RTA ADA Project. • The ADA Title I Subcommittee met with the City's Human Resource Department regarding the City's job descriptions. • Lupe Rocha, City's Engineering Department, gave the Committee an update on the Magee Beach and Packery Channel Projects. • Committee is disappointed with the November 29, 2006 article that was in the Corpus Christi Caller Times Newspaper. The Committee is concerned about significant amount of citations that are being dismissed and has requested Judge Tamez and Captain McDonald to be present at next month's meeting. C. Education Subcommittee—Gilbert Fuentes Leon Bazar informed the Commission that Mariann Bryant attended the EEOC session at her school when the representatives from the EEOC office were here in Corpus Christi. She stated that the students asked a lot of questions and there was a lot of feed back from the students. • OLD BUSINESS: (Discussion with Possible Action): Emergency Preparedness No Report • NEW BUSINESS: (Discussion with Possible Action): No Report • ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT: Leon Bazar, Director of Human Relations (Handout) • Discussion on reporting data (Month Narrative and Upcoming Events Summary) needs to be supplemented by data in the 2004 Report format. • PUBLIC COMMENTS/CONCERNS/ ITEMS FOR NEXT AGENDA: Public Comments: None Concerns: • The Chairperson informed the Commission that the NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet will be held January 13, 2007. Leon Bazar stated President Corretta Graham will be present at next month's meeting and the City would purchase tables at this event. The Chairperson, Errol Summerlin, and Dr. Elovitz expressed an interest in attending. • Linda Fallwell-Stover reminded the Commissioners about the Barbara Jordan Media CCHRC 12/07/06 2 Corpus Christi Human Relations Commission Summary Minutes for December 7, 2006 Awards to be held April 20, 2007. • Errol Summerlin informed the Commissioners about the 6th Annual Nation Homeless Persons' Memorial Day Sunrise Service. The service will be held at Kinney Street Park on Friday, December 22, 2006 at 7:00 a.m. Items for Next Agenda: • Presentation from June Martinez—No Fault Settlement Process • Presentation from Corretta Graham, NAACP President • ADJOURNMENT: With nothing further, the Chairperson asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting.
