Bourke Terry Mills Jimmie Mccurn Staff Present Jacquelyn Harrell Adell Lucas The regular monthly meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by the Vice Chair, Rosalie Beaty. Roll call was taken and a quorum was present to conduct a legally constituted meeting. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES It was moved and seconded the Minutes of October 7, 1993 be approved as read. CHAIRPERSON'S COMMENTS 4110. Vice Chair Beaty reported she had been requested to preside by the Chair in his absence. DIRECTOR'S REPORT Jacquelyn Harrell reported on events airing the month of October and November. A written report had previously been distributed. OLD BUSINESS Committee Appointments - No Report Committee Responsibilities - No Report NEW BUSINESS Human Rights Week Vice Chair, Rosalie Beaty, was at the City Council Meeting to receive the Proclamation for Human Rights Week from the Mayor. Human Rights Week will be observed December 5 through December 11, 1993 with a special program on Thursday, December 9, 1993 at 7:00 p.m., Jewish Community Center, 750 Everhart Road. Human Relations Commission is a co-sponsor with the Corpus Christi Jewish Carimunity Council and the National Conference of Christians and Jews. r 1 HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION MINUTES PAGE 2 NEW BUSINESS (continued) Report on Institute for the Healing of Racism Seminar Commissioner Jimmie McCurn reported on the Seminar which was held November 13 and 14, 1993. Commissioner MCCurn reported the conference on healing of racism was very well received by participants. Participants were culturally diverse and included Jewish, Black, Mexican, Indian as well as the dominant race in America. Films, small and large group discussion, and personal experiences were utilized. The sessions were led by a team of female facilitators. It was reported the seminar was very emotional and the experience made people feel closer to each other. Many participants felt it was an enlightening experience. Much was learned about the Jewish, Native American, Asian and Black history since biblical times. 16 PUBLIC COMMENTS - 2 Minutes Ron Hudson stated he is still waiting on an answer to his complaint. Commissioner Beaty stated the Commission can't do anything until they hear from legal, but she feels he has a legitimate complaint.
