Corpus Christi Human Relations Commission Summary of Minutes for October 3, 2013 1. CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Gamboa called the meeting to order at 5:07 p.m. A. ROLL CALL Present Commissioners: Ramiro Gamboa Mickey Kramer Corey Elizondo Kathleen Cooper Almira Flores Kyle James Edna Arredondo Elias Valverde Toni Davis Jaimee Contreras Present Staff: Sylvia Wilson (Human Relations) Christina Aparicio (Human Relations} Absent Commissioners: David Ramos Joel Mumphord Carlos Aguinaga Pastor Derrick Reaves Faith Meza Alice Aparicio-Bussey 2. REQUESTS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES MOTION Absences Carlos Aguinaga, Joel Mumphord, Pastor Derrick Reaves and Faith Meza for the 9/5/13 monthly meeting. Motion — Mickey Kramer Second — Toni Davis Motion Pass 3. APPROVAL OF REGULAR MEETING MINUTES OF 9/5/13 MOTION Motion — Mickey Kramer Second— Corey Elizondo Motion Passed 4. PUBLIC COMMENTS (LIMITED TO 3 MINUTES) Public Comments was opened; no comments made. 5. PRESENTATIONS No presentation. 6. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT a. 50Th Anniversary Update Chairperson Gamboa stated due to unforeseen difficulties and financial restraints the subcommittee was unable to meet. Further discussion ensued resulting in the proclamation being tabled till the first available Council date in December. Chairperson Gamboa stated the 2nd Annual Retreat had also fallen through due to the unforeseen difficulties. Further discussion ensued resulting in the 2nd Annual Retreat planning to begin in January 2014 and the event occurring in March 2014. Brief discussion took place regarding the 2013 Health Fair hosted by NAACP. This discussion resulted in Chairperson Gamboa stating he will look into a possible meeting between NAACP, LULAC and the City of Corpus Christi Human Relations Division. 7. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS a. Housing Subcommittee— No Report . • b. Committee for Persons with Disabilities Nothing was reported as Chairperson Ramos was not present. Mrs. Wilson stated the CFPWD was unable to meet due to no quorum. c. Education Subcommittee— Update on School Presentations Commissioner Cooper stated there was nothing to report on since the subcommittee had not had the chance to meet. She did share that while she was attending a seminar she spoke with Darren Bates. Mr. Bates shared information with her regarding the Employment Alliance for People with Disabilities (EAPD) Job Fair, which will be held 10/24/13, Del Mar Economic Development Center, from 9:00a.m. —2:00p.m. Mrs. Wilson requested if any Commissioners were interested to please contact Ms. Aparicio by email. Mrs. Wilson asked if the Youth Commissioners would be presenting to the CCISD Counselors as they did last year. She then requested the Youth Commissioners to speak to their counselors or principals regarding the Youth Commissioners Youth © Work Presentations. Youth Commissioners Elizondo and James both mentioned an upcoming Student Council convention. Mr. James stated he would see about having the Educational Subcommittee participate in the event by the Youth Commissioners conducting the Youth @ Work Presentation. Further discussion ensued. d. Disparity Subcommittee— No Report e. Goals Subcommittee— No Report f. 50th Anniversary Subcommittee— Update Ms. Wilson stated due to her being out of town at an EEOC Training Conference as well as unforeseen circumstances the subcommittee has not been able to meet. Mrs. Wilson informed the committee she was currently working on a Proclamation to be presented to the Commission by the Mayor and a room at the Del Mar Economic Center has already been reserved and she is also waiting to hear back on her request of various guest speakers as no confirmations have been made. Further discussion ensued. 8. HUMAN RELATIONS ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT Mrs. Wilson gave a verbal report on the September 2013 Monthly Performance Report with highlights of Division activity. Brief questions and comments were made by various Commissioners. 9. IDENTIFY ITEMS TO BE PLACED ON NEXT AGENDA Chairpersons Report • Youth Commissioner Elizondo's Presentation to the CFPWD Update Further discussion ensued regarding the finances of the 50th Anniversary events. Mrs. Wilson is to ask the legal department if Commissioners are able to donate monies towards the 50th Anniversary event. 10.ADJOURNMENT MOTION Motion — Corey Elizondo Second— Elias Valverde Motion Pass
