ACC sponsored cultural events
Vice chair, Jim Moore reported to the group that he, Laura, and Shelly had been working on the event and
that the details were being hashed out. Jim reminded the members about the date and asked that
members attend to promote the commission and its mission. Jim said he’s send out an email about the
next sub-committee meeting.
Public art condition assessment (Aztec Wheel public concern)
City staff, Shelly Rios, presented the group with a section of the public art assessment. She explained
what the arts maintenance budget could cover this year. She also brought up the concern a group of
citizens had about one of the public art pieces, Aztec Wheel. The members agre ed that it should be
moved up from a med priority to a high priority piece to conserved. Shelly reported that the lights on the
three art pieces on Shoreline were out and that bulbs would need to be replace or, if broken, repaired. It
was agreed that these two items would be the what the 2021 maintenance budget would be used on.
NEA application (cultural assessment grant project) –
Shelly and chair, Laura Petican talked to the group about the National Endowment of the Arts research
grant that the they were partnering with TAMUCC in submitting. Shelly explained that the grant would fund
a city-wide cultural assessment and provide interactive CGI mapping that would aid in creating a Cultural
Master Plan. The information would also be a rich resource for other cultural organizations and
businesses to tap for future grants applications and business planning. Sharon Sedwick suggested a
news release if the NEA grant was awarded. The members agreed.
Change of meeting day/time
Members discussed changing regular scheduled meetings to the fourth Tuesday at 4 pm. Motion moved,
seconded, and passed.
Luis Jimenez sculpture move
The group talked about relocating the Luis Jimenez statue located at the American Bank Center. The best
option would be to simply rotate the statue and push it back against the wall with the seagull mural.
American Bank Center staff offered this area as it would be out of the way of the construction and offer the
least amount of moving. The group agreed to moving the sculpture to this location. Shelly will contact ABC
staff and move forward with an RFP to find an art relocation firm.
Star Awards update
Laura updated the commission on the Star Awards. The artist will mail the artwork to Laura and shelly will
purchase the frames, put the awards together and deliver/ mail them to the recipients.
Possible relocation of artworks from public collection at City Hall, Garcia Center, airport, etc.
