SPECIAL DISCUSSION / POSSIBLE ACTION
Discussion and vote on Luis Jimenez relocation proposal
The group gathered to discuss a proposal from the Art Museum of South Texas (AMST) to relocated the
Luis Jimenez sculpture, Southwest Pieta. AMST formally proposed that the sculpture be moved to one of
two places on the lawn in front of the museum: 1. The area where the Steer currently site, tucked into the
corner of both buildings, or 2. Where the red sculpture is in front of the Legorreta building.
Shelly explained that both sites would be in the security camera’s view. The concern was moving the
sculpture from a partially enclosed area into the elements. Carolyn Mauck suggested that a covering
could be constructed over the sculpture. But, some of the members reminded us that the architecture of
the buildings would not allow for a structure to be built.
The members felt pressure to find a spot to relocate the sculpture with the American Bank Center
construction deadline of late October. Sharon Sedwick said that she liked option 1 best. The group
agreed. Laura Petican motioned for a vote to accept the AMST proposal to move the Luis Jimenez
sculpture to the space between the Johnson and the Legorreta buildings. Sharon Sewick second the
motion. The group voted unanimously for option1. Shelly noted the vote and said she would begin the
process of finding an art mover and working out the details of the move with AMST staff and the city
procurement department.
