SPECIAL DISCUSSION / POSSIBLE ACTION
2021 Arts Grants update
City staff Shelly Rios announced that $200,000.00 was allocated to the Arts Grant program this year. All
program announcements, including grant application and guidelines, press release, email blast, and
updates top the Arts and Cultural page will go out and be posted immediately. Shelly, Jim, and Carolyn
worked on a revised timeline the week prior and presented it to the group. The group agreed that the
grading timeline was fine and that the guidelines were solid enough to send out for this year’s program
after some date revisions. Shelly said she would post a pdf of the Arts Grant Workshop presentation in
place of an in-person workshop.
Pompeo Coppini’s Queen of the Sea plaque update
Shelly reported that she had talked to Dr. Carry Rote from TAMUCC and that she was more than happy to
research the Coppini history with the fountain commission and write the new plaque. Dr. Rote has a family
history with Coppini and the commission agreed that she was the perfect person for the job. She said she
would like the plaque installed by December. The group agreed.
Percent for Art program update
Tabled- no new news
Luis Jimenez sculpture relocation update
Shelly reported that the Art Center building staff will not need the Luis Jimenez statue moved in the
rushed timeline that was previously presented. Construction will not begin on the ABC until early next
year. The group decided, since they were no longer under a strict timeline, to vet other relocation options
and take time to make a decision. Shelly explained that she had spoken with a Luis Jimenez art
conservationist and that he was willing to fly down from Ohio to direct the disassembly and art move.
Shelly said he had estimated that a total conservation treatment with UV coating would last only about 10
years outside and cost approximately $150,000, not including transport. He strongly recommended we
keep the piece inside if possible. The group will continue to vet new locations.
Chair and vice chair vote
Carolyn Mauke was voted in as vie chair and Jim Moore was voted in chair. Each accepted.
Bill Wilhelmi City Hall mural rededication
The group agreed that Wilhelmi mural rededication and proclamation should be November 9th. The
commission would like the mayor and council to step outside and cut the ribbon on the floor mural. Shelly
will send a mayoral request for the event.
Jim Moore adjourned the meeting at 5:12
Next meeting is scheduled for October 26 at 4pm in person at the Galvan House.
