Members Present: Alice Nixon, Sharon Hines, Dora Wilburn, Veronica Towns, Ida Hobbs, Vickie Natale,
Julie Rogers.
Absent: Nicole Carroll
Staff Present: Laura Garcia, Library Director, Alan Carlos, Asst. Dir. for Library Technology
Call to Order: Alice Nixon called the meeting to order at 10:33AM.
Approval of Minutes: A motion to approve the September minutes was made by Ida Hobbs and
seconded by Sharron Hines. The motion passed unanimously.
Laura Garcia, Library Director, introduced the Assistant Director for Library Technology, Alan Carlos.
Friends of the Library Report: Sharron Hines reported that the Friends are working on their annual
budget. The Friends are planning to sponsor another Career Online High School graduation, after the
work on La Retama Central Library is finished. They are still talking to the Nueces County jail to provide
books for incarcerated individuals.
Director's Report:
• The air conditioning project at Neyland is completed and they re-open on October 11. Hopkins
Library should be closing October 18 for the installation of their fire suppression system.
• La Retama Central Library is undergoing renovations and is closed for the month of October. The
ceiling is being cleaned and painted. New carpet has been installed on the second-floor
corridors, administration. During the closure new flooring\tiles on the first floor will be installed
in the teen and circulation area. The goal is also to install new flooring\tiles on the second floor
in Local History\Genealogy.
• Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tagging has begun. Books at Neyland Library have been
tagged and encoded. Staff is currently tagging books at La Retama Central. Staff was able to tag
over 80,000 items in a week and a half. Self-check stations should be installed and ready to go in
the spring of 2022.
• One thousand pounds of food were donated during September, Food for Fines.
• La Retama Central Library has submitted a formal agreement with FamilySearch International to
become an affiliate library.
Old Business:
Alice Nixon reminded board members, Nicole Carroll, Julie Rogers, Vickie Natale, and Veronica Towns
that their terms were expiring in November, and they need to reapply if they wish to continue on the
board.
New Business
Julie Rogers moved that the absence of Nicole Carroll be excused. Vickie Natale seconded the motion
and it passed unanimously.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:25 AM.
