CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order and a quorum was established with Commissioner De La Garza absent.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: December 16, 2021
A motion was made by Commissioner Brown to approve the minutes listed above and it was seconded by Vice
Chairman Freeman. The motion passed.
III. APPROVAL OF ABSENCES: Armando Mendez

A motion was made by Commissioner Brown to approve the absence listed above and it was seconded by
Commissioner Wanzer. The motion passed.
PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
DISCUSSION AND ACTION REGARDING THE 2022 LANDMARK COMMISSION MEETING CALENDAR
A motion was made by Vice Chairman Freeman to approve the 2022 calendar and it was seconded by
Commissioner Fontenot. The motion passed.
DISCUSSION AND ACTION REGARDING THE 2021 LANDMARK COMMISSION ANNUAL REPORT
A motion was made by Commissioner Wilson to approve the annual report and it was seconded by Commissioner
Brown. The motion passed.
VII. DISCUSSION AND ACTION REGARDING ACTIVITIES FOR MAY'S HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH
Nina Nixon -Mendez, Assistant Director, gave information on this item. She said a proclamation is planned
designating May as Historic Preservation Month as it was done last year as well at City Council. She proceeded to
list activities to consider and gave examples of what other cities have done in the past. Activities to consider include
hosting walking tours, architectural scavenger hunt, museum special exhibits, discount admission at museums,
essay contests, Instagram Photo contest (City account), refurbishing historic markers, open house tours, lectures,
"behind the scenes" tours (e.g., The Ritz Theater). She also mentioned contacting the Nueces County Historical
Commission for their activities.
The Commission expressed interest in the Instagram contest, admission discounts, architectural scavenger hunt
and self -guided walking tours or "behind the scenes" tours. Commissioner Fontenot suggested reaching out to
representatives of public libraries, museums ("Museum Live"), Heritage Park or Nueces County (Centennial House)
for collaborations, have those representative attend Commission meetings. It was also suggested to have a photo
contest/scavenger hunt involving the Doc McGregor photography series ("Then & Now").
VIII. HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICER'S REPORT
• Historic Preservation Plan Update
Ms. Nixon -Mendez stated briefings continue to be held for Council members and the Plan is scheduled to
be presented once more at City Council sometime in February (9th 15th or 22nd)
• Annual Preservation Awards
She informed the Commission that a press release on this information was sent out on January 7, 2022.
February's commission meeting will include an item for discussion/consideration for potential recipients.
As a potential nominee, she suggested the Butter Krust building on Ayers Street which was converted
into a storage facility but retained much of its original exterior. For the organization category, she also
suggested The Art Center.
Commissioner Pruitt suggested additional categories for future awards. To communicate the history of the
City, he suggested adding categories awarding books/magazines/media; mentioned local Instagram
accounts communicating preservation in the City. He also suggested a category for education.
IX. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS
Commissioner Mendez added the "Ada Wilson" house located at Ocean Drive/Doddridge Street which is planned
for demolition; the "H.E.B." house (Ed Rachel Foundation) on Ocean Drive located adjacent to the Ada Wilson
house.
Summer workshops were also added so the Commission could discuss specific future projects/goals aside from
regular business items.
